Hi as topic says I am wanting to pull that big ugly space hungry airbox off the XJ650 and put 4 pod filters on. Is it as simple as doing that ? Is performance or tune effected. I have attached a pic with a couple of questions also.
Any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll hear a lot of pros and cons on here about it. If you remove it, you will need to jet, but that may not be enough and keep your mid throttle response, etc. but, there are ways to fix, it just requires a fair bit of carb work. I don't have an air box (bike didn't have it when I bought it) and a replacement including boots wasn't worth it, so I'm rebuilding my carbs and then their is a company that makes a jet kit, custom to the bike + mods that you have. I'll try to find the link to them, reasonable price.

    Well, ... don't "rip-out" the airbox.
Installing Pods ain't cut and dry.
Often, people regret doing the mod because fine-tuning becomes rather difficult.
The most popular remedy to the issues you'll face after installing Pods is the old "You have to re-jet".
    Re-jetting is vastly overstated.
Re-jetting, alone won't solve the lean condition or the bike not wanting to haul-ass when you open her up.
You have to get the gas to rise from the Bowls in sufficient quantity and hit the Intake Stream in a mist rather than a dribble.

Save the airbox, boots and clamps.
If you get it dialed-in on the Pods; you'll make some dough selling them on Ebay.
If not; you'll be able to return to normal without a regret.

That is also part of the airbox. That's the air filter compartment; the air filter is accessed through the top.

Take the top off, remove the air filter and have a look in there. You'll see what it's all about.
