Need some help here, I can't seem to verify the answers to the following questions thru any of my reference material:

    1) The gas cap on these models.......bright chrome plated or gold-tinted (like the headlight rim and swingarm bolt covers)? The original cap carries a different part number from all of the other flip-open caps; what is different about it?

    2) Tank emblems "YAMAHA"...........gold letters or chrome letters? Again, the emblems carry a different part number from their "standard Maxim" cousins.....

    3) XJ650 Midnight Maxim.....the airbox end cover emblems "650".....gold or chrome numbers? Same story as above......

Thanks for any help you can provide!

    1. 83 XJ750MK=Gold plated, and the current yamaha part number 4X7-24602-02-00 is incorrect. It gives the standard chromed plated cap. Yep. Got one!

If you find a nice gold plated one. Let me know!!
    Non-exsistant on the used market.

    2. 83 XJ750MK= Gold lettered. Confirmed on an MK tank I have for a spare.

    3. Unconfirmed, but believe them to be gold/black numbered.

Wow! I didn't realize the gas cap was originally gold as well!
I guess that's one more thing to add to the list of things to get re-plated.
Anyone know of a reputable place that does gold plating? I've heard that some auto-body shops do it on emblems and trim, so I guess I'll check around here too.

My 82 750 Maxim has gold plated Yamaha emblems on the tank and gold plated Maxim emblems on the side covers. Also the 750 on the plastic cover between the handle bars is also gold but the gas cap is chrome.

I am not positive that it is the original tank because I can only put about 4 gallons in it and I believe I read somewhere that the 750's came with a 5.5 gallon tank. It does have the fuel gauge sending unit, not sure if the 650's had the fuel gauge.

No fuel gauge on 650s. iirc owner's manual says 2.4 gallons full, .9 gal reserve. My tank holds 2.2 before i go to reserve. I've never ran it out of reserve.

The fuel sending unit 750 maxim tanks only came on the 82 tanks. None of the 650 maxim tanks had a sending unit.

RE: Plating shops: I think these are the folks I used when I had some stuff black nickel plated. I believe they can do "gold" plating as well.

(I'll have to check when I get home; it may have been a different shop.)
