I'm really wanting to get a driver's seat back for my bike, 81 xj650, but don't want to ditch the original seat, as it's in excellent shape still. Anyone know of any seat backs that would possible rise up from the grab bar, using the grab bar to bolt down?

I want something low key and very rarely have any passengers, so it's not something that would need to be taken off all the time. I haven't really seen much besides the usual rear seat backs that sit 2 feet in the air with the luggage rack off the back.

I tried to include a Google pic of something that kind of matches what i'm looking for. You guys will have to let me know if you've come across anything that may interest me. Building one myself isn't really an option.....

Until you can find a backrest - stuff towels into a duffel bag and secure with bungees or rope.

This is what i use on long trips - if you were totally anti luggage rack, im sure you could chop part of it off.

also, it can slide forward and backward, to be exactly where you would like it to be.

Yeah, I'd like to know, too. I have that luggage rack. I can't tell where the backrest is attached though

That would be perfect. I could live with a luggage rack with that set up.

I had the same thing on my 650 maxim til I decked it out with the full-dress stuff. Once the trunk was on, I'd just tie a stuff bag onto the pillion seat and overstuff it til it was comfortable to lean against.

The adjustable rack/rest units are available aftermarket.

One of the backrests shown on that link bolts to the rear fender under the front of the rear seat.
You could probably mod a seat for a V-Star or Virago as well. Whatever you get will require some mods anyway.

The rack and back rest came with the bike when I bought it so unfortunately I cannot provide any information about it.

It's a K&L brand or something of the sort, i cant recall off the top of my head for sure.

I'm sure it's like all the other accessories for older bikes, best thing to do being just keeping a constant eye on ebay with the sort queue as "sort by time, newly listed first"

I'll keep my eyes open too, they pop up from time to time in the classifides here as well.

Indeed spendy for what it looks to be, but thats about the most unobtrusive aftermarket backrest i've seen, nice find! 8)
