xj650 ecu help

    hi everyone
    i have an xj650 (81) which has been converted into a chopper..

    i've recently put it in for repair and was told that the ecu has blown
    and can't find an replacement ecu for it anywhere.

    the repair shop told me that its not an xj650 its an fz600 all though i don't believe them they said they only think this because of the what it says on the ecu..

    Apparantly its an 7 wire ecu ?

    I don't have my manual handy right now, but most XJ TCI's have two connectors: one 4-pin and one 6-pin. Not all of the pins on the two connectors are used... usually 3 or 4 on the four-pin, and 4 or 5 on the six-pin.

    Anyway, what are the symptoms? No spark? Spark only on one pair of plugs? Blowing the ignition fuse?

    I agree with SQLGuy those engines use the TCI (transistor controlled ignitor or something like that) It's kind of like a 12volt version of a CDI. And it serves the purpose of a ECU. They can be rebuilt.

    OK. Now I have the manual in front of me and, yes, the '81 650 Maxim does use a 2 connector, 4-pin and 6-pin TCI.

    The manual shows four pins used on each connector.

    as you can tell i don't know alot about bikes, i only know the basics.
    something blew my tci, i think it was all the times i jump started it off a car
    which i know is a bad idea, we could'nt figure out why the battery would'nt keep its charge so i replaced the battery and a small electrical fire broke out.

    i then took it to the bike repair shop they told me that my rectifier needed replacing and i thought "thats why it was'nt holding its charge etc"
    after they fixed the rectifier they said that i had also blown my ecu,guessing the electric start would'nt work.

    i have been helping the repair shop search for a new ecu/tci, they were trying to tell me that my bike is a fz600, which i think is impossible because the fz600 were not made till 1986, the bike looks like a xj650 engine wise and wheel wise, just that on the ecu had fz600 written on it?, and i think this has confused the mechanics some what.

    Basicly my question is, where do i get a replacement TCI?.

    so 8 wires?.

    and you say you think that you don't use all the wires?

    Not on a 650/750. The 650 has 6 pins on one connector, 4 on another. Two pins, one on each, are not used.
    I can rebuild the 650/750 TCI's if needs be.

    Not what I'm seeing: the Haynes manual is showing two grounds and two pickup signal lines on the 4-pin; and two coil drives, a B+ and a ground on the 6-pin for his bike (1981 650).

    On the later bikes, some have only one ground used on the 4-pin, and the 6-pin then gets and extra wire for the safety circuit (B/W).

    OP: A bad TCI won't stop the starter from trying to start the bike; it will just stop the ignition from firing - no spark. If the problem you have is that the electric start is not turning the bike over, fix that problem before looking at your TCI.

    thanks for your input guys.

    well as much as i'd like a tci rebuilt i live all the way over here in the u.k and would'nt really know how to go about it.

    as far as i can tell someones redone the wiring inside the bike like the indicator switch now turns off the engine, its always done this since i've had the bike because its got no indicators because it was turned into a Chopper.

    the guys at the bike shop found the ecu/tci and it had written on it (fz600) and i can't remember off the top of my head but the code on the ecu/tci does'nt match up with the one thats suppose to be the original tci, e.g (t1d4-02) or something like that.

    Oh here's another question
    if there any other Tci unit from another model of bike that could replace the xj650's tci unit?. say something from a suzuki or something?.

    has anyone ever tried this?.

    You need the specific TCI. The TCI controls the timing advance, which is different between bikes, even xj's.

    I think I see your problem...instead of searching for "tci" or "ecu", search for "igniter". Lots of them come up.

    But be sure that is your problem first....those things aren't cheap.

    What is the VIN code near the oil fill cap on the engine? That will tell us what your bike is for sure.

    According to my v5c which over here in the u.k is my motorcycle vehicle registration Certificate, the vin number and the engine number Defantly say thats its a 1980 xj650, (4K0000495)

    i also came across this site

    they seem to be the real deal and have quite a good reputation over the internet, i can find any Really nasty threads or stories about them, everyone seems to praise there products.

    they have xj750 listed under there tci replacement products.
    maybe thats the ticket?

    The lookup I did says that the correct TCI for your bike is: 5V2-82305-10-00

    A 750 will not have the same features or the same advance curve.

    However, several times you have been asked exactly what is happening with your bike, and you have not answered. You have said that the shop said that the TCI you have belongs on an FZ700, but: Was it working at one point? Why did you bring the bike to the shop in the first place?

    no if you BOTHERED read my threads i've told you whats wrong with my bike.

    an small electrical fire broke out when i installed a new battery, because the bike was'nt charging the battery (which i didn't know then), plus the last time i started it the bike would start up but would'nt acclerate past 20mph in any gear.

    so i took it to the bike shop to get it checked out, they fixed some of the burnt wiring and found that the rectifier was broken(which explains the bike not charging the battery) so they replaced the rectifer and then found obvisouly that the tci unit was also playing up!, these are the only guys in my area to repair bikes and i've had repairs and MOT's done with them before, so i trust them, to a degree.

    on the tci unit was written (fz600) and i explained to the bike place that this can't be fz600 were not made by yamaha till 1986 or somthing like that, i vaguely remember the guy i bought it off said it was rewired, probably incorrectly as the indicator switches cut out the engine.

    Last post on this thread and probably in response to you in general:

    I've read all your posts. And I understood the details of the rectifier issue and the apparently swapped TCI. What I STILL don't know if what is wrong with the bike NOW other than it doesn't have the correct TCI on it. The fact that you now want to put an XJ750 TCI on it made me think that not having the correct TCI was not really an issue to you. We had asked whether the bike cranks, whether it runs, etc. I just re-read your posts and still don't see where you answered that.

    '80-Some '81's XJ-650's ---> CDI Type Box.
    Bounce your VIN off the YamParts Site.
    Ck Part Number

    A TCI Box is NOT going to run your Bike.

    Acquire Factory Manual for your Bike.
    Replace Factory Fuse Panel before initiating Electrical Troubleshooting.
    CDI Test is best limited to ... Test with Shop Unit KNOWN to be good.

    I have to agree with SQL, we are trying to figure out why you think it needs a new tci, other than "the shop said so". Sorry, but we have all done this enough that we don't trust bike shops. They mean well enough, but these bikes are so old that if you started working on them at 18 when they were new, you would be nearly retired by now. Just the fact that they call your cdi an ecu shows that they aren't familiar with this older technology. The only person on here with an ecu on their xj just happens to be SQL, that mod isn't easy. Dude knows his stuff, if I were you I'd pm him and say something real nice to make sure he still wants to help you. Nobody likes to be YELLED at.

    It sounds like there is a lot wrong with this bike. I don't even know what "indicator switches" are (turn signals, maybe?)
    I do know this...paying shop prices to fix these bikes is for fools or the rich. If you're not one of those I suggest you bring it home, get a manual, and not pay someone else to learn how your bike works before anyone can fix it.

    look sorry if you've got the wrong idea here!, i did mention that i know hardly anything about bikes i've only had a full license for about 3 years i only know the basics about bikes, like oil changing, brake checks, etc. i don't even know how to clean the Carburetor or fix minor problems.

    the only information i have is in the posts i have given you
