    Hello,
I have an 82 XJ650 and I am having some problems. A couple weeks ago my brother took the bike out and almost spilled out. Somehow fuel is filling the crank and it got so full that it wass spraying a fuel/oil mix onto the back tire. My brother says that the petcock needs rebuild (Reserve setting doesnt provide flow) and the floats are sticking. My bro says that as long as I turn the fuel off each time I park that I should be ok tell I get it fixed. Any ideas on fixes or anything else I should be looking for? I am assuming I need to rebuild my petcock and probabaly do the dreaded carb rebuild (at least for me and my limited carb knowledge. Also as an FYI one of my cylinders seems to have a slight steady misfire.

Most likely a "Stuck-Open" Float from - "Almost" - laying it over. You're flooding-out, bad ... if the gas is starting to fill-up in the crankcase.

You really need too pull the carbs off and check the movement of the float pins. There's no shortcut.

Once you get the carbs all cleaned-up and working nice ... some of those other issues you indicated might clear-up by having the carbs cleaned-up and tuned right on-the-money.

Seems like we keep going over the same issues in different places on this forum, huh RickO
We need the moderator to organize it all to one area, so hopefully folks could read up on these common issues to find the fix, and lesson the amount of times the old timers who work on these bikes from having to keep going over the fixes.

I didnt think XJ's had a petcock that had an OFF position!?

If I had to rebuild my petcock I go with a manual petcock. There are some strings on this site that discuss this topic complete with where to buy cheeper that a rebuild kit.

My question is, did your bro accidently put your petcock in the PRI position?
In that position weak float valves would definatly leak by causing a flooded crankcase.
I also will once more suggest the good old tap to a carb that has a stuck float (for people who might not have the urge to tear into carbs) but bear in mind that you will have to have those carbs built soooon

Don't tap on the fuel bowls ... tap ... with a REAL Drumstick if you have one ... on the joint of the bowl and body. All off the them.

    Test petcock.
With the Valve lever pointing straight down ... remove the supply line and there should be NO flow out of the petcock.

Ok maybe I am confused then? I know that there are 3 Positions on the petcock PRI (From What I know used to Prime the carbs after sitting for a while) Straight Down (Not Sure Exactly What that is for) and Reserve. So when you park where should you leave the petcock? I am not sure what position he left it on all I know is that when he was riding it was dumping fuel into the crank and overflowed out on to the street and back tire. After I changed the oil (What oil was left....mostly fuel) I bought a new oil filter bolt and in the process of changing it out I noticed that even in the new oil change there was still some fuel.

Thanks for all the help, keep in mind that I just bought this bike from my bro as something to learn on and I have 0 experience in riding or maintenance of motorcycles. (Except changing the oil my bro showed me that). It is still at my bros house until I finish my "parking lot" sessions with my bro. I want to fix this problem as a little oil on my tire with my riding ability would =eating the ground.

Knob, selector, pointer, valve position -- straight down -- ON*

    Turned clockwise -- pointing to 9 O'Clock -- RESERVE*

    Turned counter-clock -- pointing to 3 O'Clock -- PRIme.

ON = Auto ON/OFF Vacuum operated when engine running*
RES = Select -- Also requires vacuum*
PRI = Select -- ON, Gas flows out to carbs - Gravity feed - Will flood engine if floats are open or otherwise allow fuel to pass. May flow out overflows on carbs until tank is empty.
