xj650 ignition problem

    Hi ,i need some help with my 1980 xj650 ,owned the bike a few years ,was running but needed engine rebuild ,so have rebuilt the engine & refitted it but now have no spark when winding engine over,pulled one plug out & when you turn ignition on & off ,the plug sparks as you turn the ignition off ,think its an earth problem ,any ideas

    Has the fuse block been upgraded? I'd check there first. If so I'd check stop/run switch. Then check the pickup coils at the TCI, Check the Coils at the TCI, Check coils, check plug caps. Also check connections at the coils.

    Having a wiring diagram handy helps.

    I would check all my connections and do check your fuse box.

    still not sure whats wrong ,fitted new battery ,removed coils & cleaned where they bolt on & earth area ,traced power feed from ignition switch through kill switch through relay to coils with ignition on ,when you turn ignition off it sparks ,when you turn kill switch of it sparks but no spark when winding over ,suspect either pickup or control unit ,any help appreciated Thanks Mick

    bike is now running replaced tci unit
