xj650 noise

    so i just did a top end on an 82 xj650 and everything seems to be ok, well as soon as i started it i heard a loud noice around the starter and stator and im not sure how or what it is. any help would be appreacated

    Description of the noise would be helpful.......

    If it's a howl it's like the starter clutch isn't disengaging.

    the timing pointer that passes the pickup coils might be making contact. Just did my top end and as soon as I started it was clear. I'm sure you turned the crank a million times when doing the valve clearances, and probably bumped the pickup w/ the wrench
