    Can some one tell me where I can find an oil cooler for a 1981 XJ650. and possibly how much one would cost. Do they make oil coolers for this year bike or would one have to be special fabricated ?

    Hey John, I've got a complete original oil cooler system off an XJ650 Turbo model: radiator, both hoses, adapter plate with bypass/pressure relief components, adpater plate mounting bolt and washer (these are new reproduction parts), and new o-rings for the hoses and the adapter plate. All in very good used condition, allthough I would wash out (with solvent) the radiator internal passages. Very good used condition, $ 225.00 plus shipping.

    NOTE: you will have to fabricate a couple of simple mounting brackets to mount the radiator to your frame, as the regular Maxim models do not have the same mounting bosses on them as do the Turbo models.

    Also, you will have to re-use your current oil filter element outer cover, by-pass valve bolt, filter, filter spring and washer plate, etc.......all the parts that you currently have.

    Or, for the ultimate set-up, you can replace the paper filter system with the spin-on filter conversion set that I sell, which allows you to use a small "can" type (spin-on) automotive oil filter in place of the factory paper element system. Works great, looks really neat, provides MUCH better filtration than the factory set-up:

    os1) Reproduction Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit....okay, the original Yamaha cartridge oil filter system is "adequate", but for real oil filtering capabilities and ease of filter replacement---not to mention a certain cool-factor!---you really want to upgrade the factory system to an automotive-type spin-on "can" filter. Doing so not only gets you better oil filtration, easier (much easier) oil changes, but also eliminates the oil cleaner cover, the easy-to-strip by-pass bolt, and all the other associated o-rings and seals needed when performing an oil change using a stock system.

    This system consists of a precision-machined aluminum filter Adapter Plate, a Mounting Bolt and Mounting Nut, a plate-to-block o-ring Seal, and your choice of a of Purolator or K&N spin-on mini-can oil filter. Everything you need to replace your original set-up on any XJ550/650/700/750/900 motor. NOTE: will work on both all non-oil-cooler equipped models, as well as the factory oil-cooler models as long as you have the factory oil cooler Adaptor Plate (the thing that the oil cooler lines bolt into).

    HCP1284PL aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit, with a Purolator Pure-One mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 49.95

    HCP1284KN aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit, with a K&N mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 55.95

    Periodic replacement parts (the only ones you'll ever need) for either kit above:

    HCP277 replacement Purolator One spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. This blue-can Purolator filter is an excellent choice that balances low-cost with good filtration ability. Each:
    $ 4.95

    HCP278 replacement K&N spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. This K&N filter features an extremely high-flow rate with excellent filtration ability. Additionally, this black can-filter has a welded-on hex-nut on the top to aid in installation and, especially, removal. Each:
    $ 12.95

    HCP2798 replacement Amsoil spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. Amsoil ultra-high-performance filters are recognized as the "gold standard" in oil filtration, showing both an extremely high-flow rate with exceptional filtration ability. Each:
    $ 19.95

    HCP2283 spin-on oil filter adapter plate-to-block O-Ring Seal, for the HCP1284PL or HCP1284KN adapter plate. Each:
    $ 3.50

    I had ah 81 xj650 maxim with a lakewood oil cooler it was after market. It had a spacer plate that went between the blook an filter housing with the feed and return lines it had a longer fillter shaft and used the stock filter and filter housing. Good luck on the serch.
