XJ650 rear bearing seal removal for adjacent bearings

    The instructions for "standard duty" bearing set indicates that the two bearings that go side-by-side on the left side of the bike should have one of their seals removed and the "open" sides of the bearings facing each other.

    Can anyone explain why it would be better to remove the seals instead of just leaving the seals on and leaving the bearings in their factory fresh grease?

    Aftermarket complete rear wheel standard-duty BEARINGS KIT, for all XJ650, XJ700, and XJ750 models. Three bearings only, as no "bearing seals" were used on these models. NOTE: the left side inner and outer wheel bearings were originally a single-sealed bearing, not the double-sealed bearing as is included in this kit. It is recommended that one of the plastic seals be removed before installation (a small screwdriver can be used to gently pry it out). The sealed side of the bearings always faces "outward", away from the other inner bearing, when installed.....thus the two inner bearings will have their "open" sides facing each other.

    simple answer is because from factory "wheel bearings were originally a single-sealed bearing"

    so they can be regreased

    "- ............... Although many bearings are sold as "sealed" bearings, for the longest life and best performance, they should periodically be cleaned and re-greased. Too much grease is a bad thing, as it causes the balls to have to "fight" their way through all of the grease, building heat, and thus shortening the bearing life. Most bearings require a 30-40% "fill rate" in their cavity to be properly lubricated, with a high-temp, high-load, water resistant grease such as our HCP8608 Red Moly Grease."

    Yes, that's the part I'm referring to.

    If it is just so that they can be re-greased sometime in the future then I would probably just install them as-is.

    If it is because the seals would rub and destroy themselves or heat would build up and destroy the bearings then those would be pretty good reasons to remove the factory seals.

    On my bike (82 XJ650 Maxim) there are 3 bearings in the rear. A larger one on the right side, and two smaller ones side-by-side on the left side behind the rear diff.
