Hey all. I was changing my oil and installing a new shifter pawl recently, and I noticed something when I opened the filler cap to put oil back in the engine:

Those clutch plates look rather rusty, don’t they? Normally I’d just go ahead and replace those, but since the price of a rebuild kit is somewhat steep, I thought I should check here and see if I need to care about this.

Since I got the bike last July, the clutch has worked just fine. No slipping or dragging, as far as I can tell. Do I replace these anyway?

If everything is/was working fine, then that small amount of discoloration (I'm not even sure that it's rust......) should not be a worry

Okay, I’m glad to hear that from someone who knows what they’re talking about. I’ve seen people in other corners of the internet say rust in the crank case represents some kind of contamination concern, but that did not seem right to me. Since it works, I’m happy to leave it as-is.

I’m pretty sure the discoloration is rust, but it’s hard to get a good picture of. At some point in this bike’s life, it sat in a garage for around 30 straight years. If it was sitting on the side stand, I could see how the clutch wouldn’t have much oil protecting it from corrosion.
