I believe the 80 and 81 are identical except for maybe paint and badges.

The 82 and 83 differ that they have air assist front forks, YICS head, automatic cam chain adjuster and the side stand kill circuit. The YICS head requires different carburetor holders and I believe the carburetor rack and pilot screws are different from the earlier 650 Max too.

1980-81 models also use a mechanical (cable-driven) tach; 1982-later use an electronic tach.
1980-81 models ground the turn signals thru its supporting stalk; 1982-up models have a direct ground wire to the bulb socket.
1980-81 models use a single tail light bulb and a shallow lense, 1982-up models use a dual-bulb tail light and a deeper lense.

1980-81 models use an oil seal at the middle gear output shaft that is eliminated on later models, don't know why, it's an odd thing.

1980-81 crankcases use different size upper-to-lower mounting bolts than the 1982-up models.

1980 models use a different clutch cover than the 1981-up models (looks identical on the outside, different pivot shaft, oil seal, and bearings on the inside).

And of course, 1982-up Maxim models use YICS engines, which means the appearance and wording on the side covers (and valvecover) differs. The side covers are interchangeable (despite wording and appearance differences); the valvecovers are not.

1980-81 non-yics engine crankcase shells, jugs, and heads are different from their 1982-up yics versions.

1980-81 wiring harnesses are different from 1982-up versions,

    Same with the TCI boxes.

Side cover emblems are unique for 1980, 1981, and then 1982-83 models.

Many of the 80-81 seats looked like a tw0-piece seat, though the separation was just at the top.....still one unit. The driver's part of the seat was scalloped deeper. The later seats were much flatter and more sleek, with no separation between driver and passenger surfaces.
