    Can I replace the wiring harness of a 1982 XJ650J with a 1983 XJ650 Seca Turbo ? I am talking about a complete swap.

Which other models are compatible with the 1982 XJ650J. A swift response will be highly appreciated. As always thanks to all the awesome folks here you guys rock!!!!!!

The Turbo has a WHOLE LOT of electrical things the normally aspirated bikes didn't.

Short answer: NO. Certainly not a straight swap, that's for sure.

Assuming you're here in the States (no location in your profile) the harness from an '82 or '83 650 Maxim will be the same. The earlier bikes had mechanical tachs so that stuff would be missing from an '80 or '81 harness.

If you're somewhere else in the world, where an XJ650J looks like the 650 Seca we got here, my answer isn't valid.

    Hi there,

I don't know how to test it and a google search revealed very little information about these obsolete electronic ignitions. Or I'm thinking of replacing the wiring harness and buying a used points and condenser set-up. There are 2 wiring harnesses plugged into the lower right hand side of the distributor.. Sometimes it is on the passenger firewall wiring harness. Disconnecting this wire puts the ignition in "base timing" mode and will set a code, so clear the code after your done setting the timing.
    Regards,

Fitz is right, we need to know if it's a Maxim or a Seca/UK.

    1980 + 1981 XJ650J, 1982 XJ650RJ, 1982 XJ650RJC, and all XJ650(UK) models had mechanical tachs.

There are also quite a few other things (i.e. fuel level sending unit) that the turbo has that most of the other 650s don't.

My opinion, you'd be better off making a simple harness from scratch.

If it is an electronic tach model, PM member 750MaximSeattle.
He has a harness for sale pretty cheap.

82-83 650 Maxim should plug right up. You can make an 80-81 650 Maxim work by adding some wires.

Replacing harness is a big job. Unless your current one burned up or a PO hacked it to bits it might be better to just repair it.

    MiCarl,
Thanx!!. I bought one off e-bay today.
I didn't know any better... so the first time after getting the bike, I disconnected the battery lead after starting the bike. Anyway I jumped the bike with a car battery and disconnected cos i was told to do so by someone after starting the bike... End result as soon as I disconnected the Meter Lights were nice and bright and the bike ran for a few seconds blowing my CDIi and all the lights I got everything to work now except the lights. I have replaced all the blown bulbs, I feel I must have burned some wire because one of my fuse holder (blade type) shows an open circuit. I had to replace the CDI, tried replacing diodes and caps and transistors...did not help I also thought maybe it is best to replace the wiring while everything is stripped....

And you do know the headlight doesn't come on until the motor starts, right? (Not sure about the instrument lights on the 650 Max, but on my 550s they don't come on either, until headlight does.)

You sure you didn't just cook the headlight relay?
