So I have had my 86 Maxim X for about a year now and I have decided to make it a bobber-ish bike. I like the vintage look so I am planning on keeping it simple while at the same time making it unique. So it has begun.

So the plan is to powder coat/ rebuild the engine.I plan on powder coating the rest of the bike as well. So far I have got the triple tree bearings and races replaced and powdered the forks and most of the trimming pieces Gun Metal grey. Cleaned up the pistons, painted the gauges and recently got the last parts I needed. Now I am in the Paint/rebuild stage. Check out the PICS.

Yeah I have my own kit and oven. It is pretty fun to do. However the frame will be painted gloss black and then urethane coated.

Not sure yet. I wanted to cut it off and make it a single seat at one time, now I am just trying to get it up and running right.

you certainly love your bike - looks like it's in your bedroom lol - how do you keep from cracking the ceramic floor tiles with the double kickstand lol - all kidding aside, thanks for the pics looking forward to seeing your creation.

I do love this bike. Honestly I don't really pay attention to the tile. Grease, oil scratches, coolant. I will deal with that later. It is too hot in Florida to have a project like this outside.

Mac 4-1. I am under the impression that I am slightly lean in 1 or more cylinders. However further experimenting will reveal the true state of the engines performance.

Colortune looks good, slightly rich. Idle sounds great too. Will be conducting some experiments with the needles tomorrow.

I raised the needles .010 and the bike ran much better. I am going to make a fuel level tester today and check that out. Judging by how the bike sounds it is a little bit lean while accelerating from a stop after the bike is warmed up. Any thoughts?

Gee, you got a good ear, there's no way I could have said my X was running lean just by how it sounded.

I fixed the speedometer whine, and I am confident that the bike is finished. Now what am I going to work on?

I would work on a different tail light. Did you ever get the lean condition fixed? If not, you'll end up burning a piston or 2. Some people use the old airbox boots as velocity stacks between the pods and carbs. It helps tune in the carbs better with pods.

Well I am constantly listening and checking when I ride, I haven't noticed any lean noise or performance issues. As far as the taillight goes, In a city like Orlando, I want people to see as much of me as possible so they don't run me over like roadkill. So I am going to keep that one till I move.

Have you pulled the plugs to see what color the tips are? White would be lean- Tan is what you want- dark Brown to Black is rich.
Look thru the J&PCycles.com site for all the different styles of tail lights available, some are small but there's a lot of good choices too. I modded the rear fender into a Fatbob style, put a cateye light under the fender and a Maltese Cross light on the back of the sissybar. They are wired into the same circuit, but they have Led bulbs so the current draw is about the same as the original.

Thanks I will check them out. That sounds pretty cool. I think I am going to keep the original for now.
