Anyone ever build one or know a company that makes a nice one? If i get a welding job when I move to Charlottesville I might make a couple in my spare time. But wouldnt mind some dimensions to work with or get a good idea

Yamaha made one for the 700. It is small.....often called a '6-pack rack' since a 6-pack of Mountain Dew ia about all that can fit on it. BUT....I have loaded it up pretty high with bags and stuff that have the weight transferred to the seat....then I can lean against it for long trips.

Ive seen a few "factory" rack on Ebay. WAY too small!
I really like the Cobra luggage racks cause they're long, but they dont look... Vintage.
    I'll probably just make one!

But hey if yall have one on your bike, factory, or have made one, lets see some pics!!!

Pay attention to how you mount anything to the back of the XJ700.
The whimpy two bolt frame where the OEM rack mounts (and backrest) isn't designed to handle much weight. I THINK the factory rack is rated for 10 pounds or something like that....and I had a buddies bent fender to prove it before the scrap truck came.

I re-inforced my frame to provide a solid mount for the trunk which worked well. You really just need another attachment point a couple inches ahead of the standard bolt holes to stiffen it up.

A little time, a welder, a vise, and some metal is all you need to put something together.

You could have bought the one I just sold :)

    I saw that one too!
    Very nice support!
Hmmm certainly a good idea. Rear seat mounts ok it looks like. I've got the factory backrest, I'm gonna have to do a lot of tweaking!

The factory rack bolts on the top of the backrest, so that will complicate things a bit if you extend the mount.

Yes, the seat fits right over the top. My buddy had a full size car battery and 6 quarts of oil in his trunk with no problem....It was just really easy for him to pop a wheelie :D
