    I thought the difference was model years with one being 1985 and the other 1986. However, I just saw both reviews by www.bikez.com/motorcycles/yamaha_xj_700 ... m_1985.php‎ and both were classified as 1985 models.

    I thought mine was the N model, but now I have no idea. I haven't been able to find any explanation on the internet. Does anyone know the difference?

    Your first instinct was correct, the model numbers “N” and “S” refer to the year (’85, ’86). The bikez.com review is wrong; both pictures appear to be ‘85s (judging by the small, round Yamaha tank emblem).

    To see what you have, check your VIN number, stamped into the right side of the steering tube:

    1985 XJ700 Maxim, USA, non-California
    Model = XJ700N, VIN = JYA1FG…

    1986 XJ700 Maxim, USA, non-California
    Model = XJ700S, VIN = JYA1NH…

    check Chacal's writeup if you find a different VIN
    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=44644.html

    The differences between the two years are mainly cosmetic (e.g., different tank emblems, paint schemes). A write-up on the differences between the ’85 and ’86 Maxim X’s can be found here:
    http://www.maxim-x.com/notes.html#modelnums

    while not directly applicable to your bike, some of differences made to the X's also apply to the airheads.
