Here is some info I wrote sometime back on this post you may find helpful.

Thought I would add this as it applies to windshields. I was reading the January Issue of cycle world and in there service advice column where people write to the magazine and answer there questions someone wrote in with a question regarding windshield height. So the question was what is the proper height for a windshield and he contends that a rider should be able to look over his windshield for better visibility, especially when it is raining. But his friends prefer to look through their windshields. So what is the right.
MC. reply. Traditionalists would probably insist that it’s best for the top of a windshield to be positioned just below the rider’s forward line of sight. That way, the shield doesn’t interfere with the view of the road ahead, and at speed, most of the oncoming air is diverted over the rider’s head. A lot of other riders, however, like to ride in as much of a still-air pocket as possible, so they prefer a taller shield and don’t mind having to look through it rather than over it. There are drawbacks to both preferences. Riders who look over their shields usually still get hit with some wind turbulence and rainwater, depending upon the shape and angle of the shield. And since motor cycle windshields do not have wipers or washers, riders who look through their shields can have their forward vision impaired when riding in the rain be the accumulation of dirty water and road grime. The pick is what ever works for you.

I recently ordered a Slipstreamer Spitfire windshield off of Ebay. I have had my bike (my first street bike) up to 70 a few times and I decided that I definitely wanted a windshield. It's supposed to be a direct bolt-on with quick-release if you ever need to take it off. Everything I've read says that the top of the shield should line up with the bottom of your nose. This makes sense to me, as per mentioned in the earlier post, that way if you do get caught in the rain or similar grime, you're not looking through a streaky mess. I'll also probably treat my new windshield with Rain-X, after checking to make sure it doesn't damage the acrylic.

Thanks to everybody who helped me with my newbie questions about slow turns, etc. I've gotten my permit and after riding just a few times I got a really good feel for the bike.

Anyway, I'll add some more pics to my gallery with the windshield after I put it on.

Speaking of add-ons, can anybody recommend a set of soft bags?

I just put on a Nitional Cycle Plexifairing, and love it! This IS supposedly one of the "too tall" windshields that you must look through rather than over, but I like the additional screen. Wind, bugs, etc seem to be well diverted around me.
From my point of view, I'd rather have dead bugs and mud on my windshield than my helmet visor. I treated it with rain-x, but haven't ridden enough in the rain to check it out - just 12 mi. in a very light drizzle once....
