    Both the speedo and tach faces on my 700 are white. The gauges on some Viragos are black and will work on a Maxim. Could be someone swapped out the tach.

    To the best of my knowledge, Yamaha didn't start using white faces on their instruments until after the '83 model year, and then only on some models; somebody has swapped with an earlier tach.

    If you have an 85 or 86 air-cooled xj700n, the tachometer will look like one pictured in this E-bay listing I found:

    It's white, and has the correct total RPM's at 11k and a 9500 redline.

    Ones for a Maxim X are also white faced and will work on your bike, but have a 12K max RPM and a 10K redline.
