When CYCLE magazine reviewed the XJ700X in '85 they mentioned it was equipped with a 12K electronic rev limiter.

I haven't seen any other reference to this, does anyone know if this bike does have a rev limiter and are there many other XJ's equipped with them?

I sure as hell hope so, seeing as how that's 2000 past redline...

I know! I'm wondering if the damage may already be done before the limiter kicks in....it's more idle curiosity than anything as my 'X' will probly never see anything over 8K, if that!

(nod) I know what you mean about idle curiosity. Honestly, I don't have an answer to the question, but I'm going to guess that damage might occur if one were to take the engine up past 10K and hold it there for a while -- in other words, intermittent super-high revs wouldn't fry the the powerplant the instant one passed redline.

Kinda like how speakers have RMS ratings and "peak" ratings. You can run 600W through your cheap $20 speakers for a split second or so, but much longer than that and they'll fry.

The start of red line on the tacho 'should' match the end of the torque curve, and the engine power starts to drop at that point. A good point for your shift light to turn on.
The area after the red is what you really should avoid at all costs.

Different engines have different reasons for where the redline is, long stroke engines are limited by piston speed/rod strength, but older 2 valve engines may be more limited by valve weight/spring issues.
Some of the old Yamaha head twin cams (Toyotas) could hold impressive revs if you increased the valve spring tension. Very similar valve setup on them too.

I think the Japanese Engineers call the Electronic Ignition System a "Rev-Limiter" ... as opposed to a Device added-on to actually LIMIT the rpm's.

I have Limiters on my 900 and Max750.

DYNA Rev-Limiters that Ground-out the Coils at whatever you set the Limiter for.

The Yamaha TCI Ignitions require a Resistor for each Coil in order for the LIMITER to function Properly.

The DYNA 3000 is a nice unit.
    It's a Multi-function Rev-Limiter.
    Puts a Top-end on Engine rpm's.
Has Dip Switches for RPM "Range" setting and a "Pot" for fine-tuning.
ON-OFF "Switchable" to disable the Limiter when you need the torque.
Hidden Switchable as an Anti-Theft Unit.

(When the Limiter sees +12V with the IGN Sw. OFF, ... The Coils are Shorted-Out so the Bike WILL NOT Start.)

The article referred to it as an electronic rev-limiter, that's the only thing I have ever read about it and I'm pretty sure it's non-adjustable. And yes, the Dyna's are very nice units.

I ran up the 750 to 11k yesterday on a 1st gear takeoff. had to hang on tight lol but the front end never came up so that's good.

I believe I kicked it in on my first X (about 20 years ago)...passing an annoying car doing 55 in the left lane... I thought I killed it but once I got below 10K she ran fine again. I think it was about 12K rpm.
I'm not about to test it again (at least not on my daily ride)
