I have a 86 xj700x maxim x that my stock speedo cable came out while riding. I got the new cable, lubed and installed it. Now the speedo is very sluggish and does not maintain correct speed (way slow). But the weird thing is the trip odometer still works correctly. I figured that I had to oil (per bigfitz52 awesome speedometer repair post). The problem is that I cannot get to the parts to oil. I cannot figure out how to get the speedo apart. Has anyone done this before that could point me in the right direction? There is a screw on each side of the cable connector is for holding the connector to the body. I thought maybe the chrome ring around the glass comes off but can't figure out how. Everything is original and I am not sure how things come off and don't want to break anything. I would send a photo but camera isn't working correctly, I will work on that if needed. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

The XJ700 speedometers basically do NOT come apart........brilliant factory engineering. You may be able to spray a bit of lube from the backside of the housing thru some of the acees holes (or drill a small hole in the housing).

Unfortunately, you have "canned" instruments. (I checked the fiche.)

Accessing the "guts" requires a little surgery. You need to remove the actual instrument from the outer can and then carefully slice the inner housing around its 'equator' to get at the innards. Be sure to mark it in at least three spots for when you glue it back together.

Or, start with lubing the input bushing and see if that in and of itself does any good.

Did you get a NEW cable or one that was used?

I'd start at the input side at the wheel. Make sure that is cleaned and lubed (requires at least the removal of the axle if not the wheel), then move to lubing the cable and shooting some lubricant up into the speedo itself.

Speedo does not come apart! Oh great, just my luck. I will have to attack the input bushing even though I am not too confident about taking off the wheel. Maybe I will try the "drill small holes to oil" method first. It was a new cable so I know that is not the problem. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Any others let me know. Thanks

all you need to do to get the wheel off is break the pinch bolt (12mm) loose first then break the axle loose (22mm??), lift the bike by the lower triple tree and stick a jack stand under the frames lower x memeber...(of course put the thing on it's center stand first) and voila! It's up in the air for easy maintenance (You'll probably need to remove the calipers {12mm} as well)

Actually, the CAN come apart. I did a write-up on it for Hap on his Maxim-X site. If you have trouble finding it, pm me and I'll try to dig up the URL myself.
