I need to replace the engine in my custom Mad Max SECA. There's a decent number of both SECA and Maxims around, can I grab an engine from either and swap it straight over with no other changes? Or would I also need the carbs, ignition box, or other bits if going for the Maxim engine because timing or other tuning parameters are different?

A 750 Maxim engine will swap in mostly direct. You will need to either transfer the solid engine mounts fom the Seca over to the Maxim engine, or modify the Maxim motor mounts to fit (the upper-front mounts need a tiny amount of trimming done to their flanges).

You mean the little triangle bits of steel that go from the dual bolts on the frame to the single bolt on the engine? I'd consider those part of the SECA frame, and (obviously) still have those (as well as the whole blown engine).

NO. Not those. Those are the mounting brackets, not the mounts.
When you pull the engine you'll see the mounts are pressed into the engine cases. The Seca mounts are solid steel, where the Maxim mounts are rubber over steel, and use steel tubes to maintain the spacing of the brackets in the engine. The outer flanges of the front-upper mounts will interfere with the frame lugs on the Seca, and must be trimmed to fit. I think that the lower-front mounts might also need to be trimmed, but I haven't done a swap in a few years, so can't be sure.

Also the shifter mechanism is different as the Seca has more rearset pegs than the Maxim. Everything bolts from one to the other though no big deal.

Cool, sounds like I'll go for which ever I can get then.

Huh, OK. Guess I'll see it if I buy one. Sounds like its do-able anyhow. Worst case scenario, I spend some time in the machine shop making my own press in mounts.

That should not be necessary. The Seca mounts will press out, if you're careful about setup.
I went with the rubber mounts from the Maxim when I had a little accident with my Seca cases. I can't really tell the difference between the two, even when riding in a sporting manner (but there is a bit less felt vibration).
