Just saw a craigslist ad for an 750 Maxim, same year and model as the one I have currently but a slightly different style, he was asking 500 but I got it down to 200. I am willing to put all my effort into it but I want to know what Im getting myself into. Here is the ad:

    "1982 Yamaha Maxim
I bought this bike with the intention of getting it running and riding it daily, but it just hasn't happened.

I put a new seat cover on it, rebuilt the carbs and re-lined the fuel tank.
I think the bike has a leak at the intake manifolds? It will run on starter fluid but then it dies? It has low miles, like 17k,
I don't have the title, just haven't had the time to go apply for it, it was lost by the previous owner.

    Needs:
    Mirrors
    Registration
    New front tire"

How much money you think am I looking at to fix this beauty up? I am no mechanic but I am very good at following directions.

more than likely it needs new carb to head boots. they would be a very easy thing to do, except (as i learned the hard way) the bolts in the head are very weak, and very siezed. i broke every single bolt except for one. drilling them out was terrible because of the lack of room to work with. also, the boots are not cheap. im not trying to scare you away, thats still a killer price!

I'd be careful with a bike with no title. If he can get it before you buy it then by all means grab it, but not without that title.

Edit: i just saw the 'no title' part. Personally, I shy away from anything without a known (and easily attainable) good title, as I don't have the space or cash to have a track-only bike.

Title is the main issue - if he never titled it you will probably have to locate the previous owner. Check into that before you jump - the rest just takes time and money. $200 is a heck of a deal

By the way runs on starter fluid only is probably a fuel issue. It should run with cracked manifolds however it won't run well IMHO...

    The bike pictured is a 650,not a 750.

Perhaps I should have stated that the CHASSIS is a 650. The 750 had a different grab rail, exhaust, and foot controls. It is very possible that it has had a 750 engine installed, however. If you can get the engine ID number, chacal would be able to tell you the original engine displacement.

well, i live in indiana and have plated many of vehicles without a title, it is a pain and it takes a while, need to have vin checked by a police officer, get signed affidavit from the officer he did the check, and a notarized bill of sale with at least 2 unrelated witnesses, and no problems.
If i could i would snag it up for parts for my 83 xj750

For a couple-hundred dollars you'd have a great Bike to get going.
You could sell a few parts and get your money back; no sweat!
Carbs: Cleaned and all nice-looking would bring $175-250.00

The NO Title is the scary part.
That fact alone needs to be overcome. You need to find the Original Title Holder and either locate the Title or get him to have an Affidavit Transferring the Ownership and Title without Liens over to you.
    Bill of Sale
    Sworn Affidavit of Title Transfer
    Application for New Title.

If you get all the "I's" dotted and "T's" crossed ... you'll be OK.
