I have a 1982 XJ750 Maxim and have spent some time getting it ready for the first ride. I have taken the carbs out and cleaned them- they actually looked good when I took them out but I thought I would make sure. The only part I did not clean was the choke rail area. I synced the carbs as best I could --- static and in place. The bike appeared to idle just fine. After my second or third ride the bike rpm started to race after warming up. Went out next morning - it idled just fine when cold and when it warmed up again it started to race. There has to be something very fundamental here that causes the bike to have a tendency to do that. From all the discussions on the forums it appears this is something many have experienced--- so what is it that is causing it. Very few threads show a "solution"- that is if there is even one. Is there a checklist maybe?? It is so frustrating to many I am sure. Taking the carb bank out does take time - but what are you going to look for or do once you have them out. If there is someone that knows of a checklist -- please provide a pointer. I will appreciate any hints as to what I can do.

    Sure.

    -VALVE CLEARANCES IN SPEC.

-Carbs religiously clean, slides pass the "clunk" test. You will need to break them down further than what you've described; get a service manual.

-Float levels set and verified using fuel and clear tubing.

    -Bench sync.

    >carbs back on bike<

-Running vacuum sync with YICS blocked.

    -Adjust mixtures, fine tune.

In order. You won't be able to get a good sync if your valves aren't in spec.

Always set your idle after at least 30 mins of driving. Never set the idle cold or you will have a racing idle when it gets warm.

But do all that stuff Fitz listed first!
