I recently picked up what was advertised on craigslist AND the title as a "1981 XJ750 Midnight Maxim." It looks as though SOME modifications were done, but otherwise stock. The question I have, do I really have it what I was told it is???? The insurance company (Progressive) didn't have any info on the VIN I gave them. I also can't seem to find anything on a 1981 Midnight Maxim. From what I read the Maxim 750 wasn't released until 1982. Can anyone tell me what kind of bike it really is??? Starts right up, idles smoothly, and shifts through all gears...

I am pretty sure what you have there is a 650 Midnight Maxim. The year should be on the sticker under the tank. The front wheel is single disk which is a characteristic of a 650, plus the side covers look like the 650 model.

Nice looking bike, congrats on the ride. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Saber, appears you are correct. Definitely a 650. First thing I need is a new set of tires. I see you're located in Reading, I live in Lancaster myself. Anyone know where to go for cheap motorcycle tires? This is my first bike ever, I'm in need of new tires, speedo light doesn't work, and the tach doesn't work. Any suggestions on where to start???

There seems to be a lot of flat black on parts that were originally "Gold" plated parts. The side cover extensions and the seat grab rail are two that come to mind. The tips of the engine cooling fins were also painted gold if memory serves me. If you can find a spot to check, that would confirm that it is a Midnight. XJ4Ever, Chacal, also has a serial number explanation that should help ID the model. I think it is a 650 Maxim though.

    Front tire on backwards?

    Looks like it might be.
