Hey there, I'm the proud owner of an 82 xj650 maxim and a complete parts bike. I want more range like the xj750 maxim tank offers, but think it would look awesome with a xj750 seca tank. i have read that it doesnt fit the seat. how so (too long, too short)?

Mount points will all work but he seca tank is raised in the back at the mount point so im pretty sure the maxim seat will hits on it. The lines also look kind of odd going from the seca tank to the maxim side covers. so you would probably need to custom fab a seat and side covers to get it to look right.

here is what I mean about the mount point at the back of the tank.

Thanks! I was just thinking about different things I could do to set my xj apart from the rest and gain some range at the same time. I guess I should just get a xj750 maxim tank and save myself some time. I have heard they bolt right on. I have some pods, getting some 4-1 exhaust, have jets and getting new diaphragms for the carbs, adjust the valve shims, so I have a full plate!

Since were talkin' 30-year-old bikes here, I hope nobody minds a 2-month-old thread bump.

How about an update on your tank-swap idea? I'm also shopping for a Maxim tank, but the only specs I can find show that the Maxim 650s and 750s each have about 13L tank volume, making such a swap pointless. Have you found the 750 Maxim tanks to be actually bigger volume than the 650 Maxim? Are there any published specs showing a difference? If anybody can verify the actual vollume of these tanks, it would be most helpful.

The specs that you are finding are incorrect. The 750 Maxim tank is actually 20.5L (5.4 US Gal) including a 3.5L (0.9 US Gal) reserve. The 650 tank is 13L (3.4 US Gal). Thereby giving an increased capacity of 2 gallons using the 750 tank.

I appreciate hearing your clarification *before* I throw-down for a used tank. Can you recommend any good sites for quick, accurate look-up of this type of XJ spec?

Wow, they are nicely shaped for such a huge volume. That's even .4 gallon larger than my monstrous, long-range 750 Seca tank, unless my Yamaha owners' manual is also incorrect.

Huh, my Haynes manual has the 650 Seca as the biggest tank, and the 750 Maxim more like 4.5 gallons. I know I've *never* put more than 4.1 gallons in it, and I've run my 750 Max until it was sputtering into the gas station.
