I've been searching all over for a 81 xj650 tank that is dent free. I have a local Sport bike warehouse/shop here in Toledo that has been in business for 40 years. The owner has rooms of tanks but does not have a xj650, but many clean xj750 tanks. I told the owner that on this forum the folks say the 750 is a direct fit with no modifications and he says that's a lie. Is there anyone who is currently using a 750 tank on a 650?

If you have a 650 Maxim then a 750 Maxim tank is a direct fit; no changes needed. I am not sure if a 750 Seca tank will fit on a 650 Seca.
You can print out the link and take it to him if he argues about selling a tank to you.

I have a 650 maxim and had no trouble mounting a 750 seca tank on it.

I want to mount a XJ750 tank into XJ650. I don't want to put a seca tank on there. I don't get why he would be so weird about selling me a xj750 tank.

    Thanks for the help though.

Then you can go tell him that you had just bought the bike and it was misidentified by the seller. Buy the XJ750 tank, install it, and ride. You'll gain almost a gallon of fuel along with having a dent-free tank.

One minor point. There are two sub-models for every model of XJ. Seca (the sporty one) and Maxim (the cruiser).

could be he is just a purist about motorcycles.
I myself cringe when I read someone is cutting up a bike to make a cafe racer or bobber.

But putting on a different tank is a LOT different than cutting! I agree with ForestJeep, how unusual is it for a shop owner to turn down a sale?

Sorry for the confusion but it is a maxim bobber that I'm working on. Besides the tank it's all done. The tank is the final piece.

    That's a great idea though.

The XJ750 MAXIM tank will fit with no mods, and is certainly a recommended upgrade.

The XJ750 SECA tank will physically fit the frame with no problem, but the rear side drop-off makes for an odd look due to the non-integration of it to the 650 side covers. It is also a little bit "longer" in the rear end and may cause a bit of stock seat interference at the front end of the seat.

The XJ750 tanks (all except a 1983 XJ750 MAXIM model) have a large hole for the fuel sender, so if the fuel sender is not included with the tank, you'll need a block-off plate/gasket for that area.

    Is he a betting man?
Bring the bike along. Bet him double or nothing (the asking price of the tank) that it will fit.
