    hello
i own a 1982 yamaha maxim 750. when i got it the guy i bought it off of didnt have an old registration, title, keys, or any clue what the vin number was

after i researched a little i figured most of the vin out by finding bits and pieces here. so far this is what i got

    JYA15R CA******

i do have the last six but i would rather not post them so someone could use my vin if they dont have one :)

i believe the first number after the R is a 1 but most of the vins i have seen for my style bike have been 00 so im not sure what goes in there

    can anyone help me?

Did you know that your VIN is stamped into the steering head on the right hand side? The left side has a sticker which may have some numbers missing from age and wear, but the right side is stamped into the metal.

The XJCD shows the 82 models VIN starting at 15R-000101 and ranging to 15R-100000 for USA models.

Look on the frame up at the steering head ... there should be the whole number stamped right on the frame.

    Mine's a JYA22R Bike

unless i missed something somewhere i read that theres 2 places for you to find your vin number,

one is the sticker on the left side of the bike in between the handlebars and forks

other is on the right side of the bike. you have to pick up the gas tank to see it, and it says something like 15r-000101

the stamped in one has the engine code (15r) and the last 6 digits of the vin number (000101)

if there is in fact a 3rd spot to find the complete vin number i havent read or heard aboiut it but would love to know about it.

I have the same problem, Mine was registered with just a few numbers from the day it was bought, I know all 3 owners of it. I talked to Yamaha in Savannah, they said they would be able to contact Yamaha with the engine/frame number and find out the vin number, you might want to start there, if not, depending on how your going to get it registered, you could try using the frame number, I think thats what's used on mine.

No there is no third place. But there are 3 places for the info. The stamped number on the engine is not a complete VIN. Only an engine number. The complete VIN is on a sticker on the left side of the steering head between the handlebars and forks, as you said and on the right side of the same area stamped into the metal.

I have the same situation... it seems that from what everyone is saying the number is complete, but the DMV VIN history site is looking for 17 digits?? Mine is JYA15R00XXXX. I am also wondering how to confirm the engine size and exact model number - I think it is a 1981 XJ750J from all of my research...

Look at the stamp on the case above the Clutch. That should give you the engine number and run of production.

The engine # on the case, the stamped # on the fork, and what I can read of the sticker, all match, but there seems to be something missing from the vin on the sticker. and I don't see engine size, is there a chart that will tell me that info from the engin number?

My bike only has 9 digits to it's matching serial numbers (engine, frame, and decal). I ran into problems trying those online vin number search sites also, but didn't have any problem with my licensing department.

From the XJCD here's your vin number info.......
    15R-000101 thru to 15R-100000 is a US model 1982 XJ750J

I'm trying to figure out the same thing on my 81 XJ650. and i have a couple questions. True or False. in 1980 VIN's were still 9 digit. If that is true wouldn't a "1981" have been made in 80 therefore bearing the nine digit VIN?

So the VIN on these bikes is only 9 digits right? I went and tried to register it at my AAA office and the girl didn't beleive me I guess. So I went to my local Yamaha dealer and he confirmed that back they they had 9 digit VIN numbers.

I had a similar problem with an XJ650J I got sans title. The VIN sticker was missing and the stamping on the head tube does not have all 17 digits. It does not contain the information about manufacturer, country etc.

I used the info from the steering tube, and filled in the rest from the VIN on my titled XJ650J and headed up to the secretary of state with my 17 character VIN. The nice clerk informed me the check digit was wrong. "DOH!"

Back to the computer with my manufactured VIN and a VIN decoding web site trying different check digits until I didn't get an error.

Back to the secretary of state with my revised VIN where I was issued a title, no problem.

So, the point of my story is you need someone to provide you with a good VIN for your model, you plug in your serial number from the head tube, hit the web to calculate the check digit and you will have the VIN for your motorcycle.

So, you need to start a new thread asking for an accommodating XJ750J owner to provide the first 12 characters of a valid VIN.
