I'm converting my XJ900 into a bobber, I want to use a pair of XJ650 Maxim wheels? I know that one is drum and one is disc brake, what I need to know is:
    1) Will I have to make any changes to the shaft drive?

    2) What parts I would need to make this convertion work?

    3) Has anyone done this before and if so How do I go about doing it?

I'm not very mechanically minded so all help greatly received, Photo etc.!

    Cheers

First off, I'd like to suggest that you get another bike to bob, as running 900 's are getting quite rare, and neglected Maxim 's can be had for $200.

Anyway, there's some kind of rubber dampener in the rear hub that is only on the Turbo 650 and 900, and it's different than all other XJ 's.
You will need to work around this problem.

You will need to weld on a bracket on the swingarm for the bar that goes to the drum, and get a different brake pedal.

Even a complete swingarm swap will not be a direct bolt-in because of a difference in width- - you will need to make up a spacer. But that would be your easiest way. I haven't done any of this, this info is from previous posts ^^^.

It could be done with a little work.....Just recently I "borrowed" the rear disc setup off my XJ900 and basically bolted it on to my Seca Turbo, with a little welding done here and there. To the die hard 900 fans, do not worry......I have just come across another low mileage 83' Seca Turbo with no title and a LONG downtime for rather cheap, and I plan on creating a 650LJ powered Seca 900 here in the near future. For now I put the Turbo wheels on the 900, and thought for a second about running it with a drum brake.....nah I don't think so. Getting to your question, yes It would be possible with a little thought and welding, but a huge decrease in stopping power for sure....but a drum would look smoother on a bobber though. You could use the 900 brake pedal shaft for the drum rod, you'd have to turn down the brake shaft 30 degrees to make it move horizontally instead of vertically, vice-versa on my turbo....I moved the shaft up 30 degrees to push up on the brake cylinder like the 900 originally does. I plan on waiting for some XJ900 wheels to float onto ebay sometime so I can get my rear disc back, in the meantime it's going to get prepped for the forced-induction transplant. Here are a few pictures so you can get an idea of what I did.

Here is the crush sleeve used for the disc stabilizer bar welded on the swingarm, you can also see the tab and nut welded on the frame for the brake cylinder

The completed swap, relocated helmet lock to other side, MUCH better braking!
