xjrunning probs

    hi iam new to site have gained alot of info from site so i thought best join i have 1981 xj 750 i have re shimed cleaned carbs more than once but still wont run right it is not running on #1 cylinder all the time and is running rich i dont know what to do now help

    Did you bench sync the carbs?

    Did you sync them after the cleaning ON the bike?

    Have you set your mixture screws back to stock?

    forgot to say have put in new plugs and synced carbs on bike checked float levels it has air pods and straight through pipes thanks for quick replies

    opps forgot new inlet rubbers synced carbs with yics tool found on this site with vacum gauges new spark plug leads

    there's youre problem.

    Also, drill out the brass cap so you can get to the mixture screws.

    thanks dave for help but i have already worked with mix screws but this was before i had shimed valves would i need to do them again is it better to do them on the bike or bench test cheers richie

    After you shimmed the valves, then synch and colortune.
    Yes, go back and adjust the mixture screws again.
    You would think with pods you would be running lean.
    As far as #1 not hitting properly have you done a compression test on it?

    yes have done compression test within 10% got it going on all four today sounded ok then took it for a drive drove like a pig coughing and back firing and blank spots still rich think it might be float needles as i could not set them as manual which left it to rich so i think it is starving itself with the way i have them set also very rich on 2& 3 will try to get float needles fixed
