I bought a 1980 xs400 special, which ran pretty much fine until i cleaned the carbs.

    heres what happened:
i put in pod filters and figured id clean the carbs.

while cleaning the carbs, i broke the thread on one the main jets sad.gif since the break was halfway down the thread, i put it back in, fitted the pod filters, and turned it on
the bike ran pretty well for about 10 minutes, and then it quickly started to lose power. then it started hesitating whenever i gave it gas and in a few minutes finally stalled anytime i touched the throttle. it starts up, idles, but as soon as i give it the slightest bit of gas it stalls. I figured the pod filters were causing it to run lean and overheat, but the problem persists even though i put the original airbox in.

maybe it seems obvious to change the jets but i have no idea how i would get the broken one out
any suggestions? ANY help will be greatly appreciated

How far did you break the carbs down? Is it possible you mixed up some of the jets?

i only went as far as taking the float bowls off. all the other screws seemed like they seized so i didnt bother with it. I'm having trouble relating my stalling problem to the carbs because it only happens after the first mile of riding...

I'm a bit confused - here you indicate it will now idle and dies when you touch the throttle. Is that true or will it go for while then stall even now?

    right. The problem is:

The bike will start, run for 10 minutes (or 1 mile of riding), and then lose power and hesitate when i give it gas. a minute after that it will stall at the slightest twist of the throttle.

Check your float levels and the gas flow in your fuel line. Also check your gas cap ventilation - it's possible you are vacuum locking in the tank.

How long does it take before thing get back to normal and the cycle repeat?

it takes about 30 minutes before i go through the whole thing. gas is flowing through the rubber hose between petcock and carbs. how can i check gas cap ventilation?

i just dont understand why it shuts down only after a certain amount of time

Try running with the gas cap open. It takes time for the vacuum lock to develop. It sounds like a fuel issue.

Also do you have a clear fuel filter in place? Does it have any gas in it when this occurs?

i feel like a doof, but the symptoms were identical when i was running the pod air filters.

i was out of gas.. i guess this will serve as a reminder to check the obvious things first

thank you for trying to help, its greatly appreciated

Well at least I was right - a fuel issue

At least you figured it out - could have been worse....
