I'm tuning up an XS400 and I'm finding that apparently no aftermarket manufacturer believes in its existence!

No Haynes or Clymer repair manual, Emgo levers are wrong and none of the local bike shops have used parts that work either!

I love this bike. It looks cool (gas tank has awesome shape), has the sweet monoshock, DOHC instead of the 250, 360 and 400 SOHC and it can really haul ass despite being considered "small" by all my Suzuki Intruder friends.

I know there are some XS400J guys on here, maybe we need to start our own site for parts, manuals etc...

P.S. if anyone needs an XS400 SOHC repair manual, new in plastic, let me know.

About to be one more! If all goes according to plan, I'm picking up a 1980 XS400 Special on Thursday. Can't wait to get started on it.

After a few weeks of riding mine, I am actually starting to like it. I paid $300 for mine off of craigslist... I do need a new cover for mine, but I am thinking I will drill a hole where the broken tab is on the left side cover and run a bolt in it to hold the cover on.

What do you mean, it's got two wheels just like my Seca. Thats OK, it's something to put on the lift and work on while I enjoy my XJ.

DW is referring to the fact that the XS you're talking about is not one of the "half an XJ" XS's that came along later.

The XS400 you're going to be working on is more like a mini-XS650.

Apples and Oranges. Still fruit, completely different trees.

I hate to be a "me too" but... ME TOO!
Just got my '82 XS400 and have lots of fixing up and tuning ahead of me.
WriterRider I know what you mean about the model confusion... click my 'www' link to read my experience trying to find spark plugs... NGK quotes the wrong ones!
That manual is close, but not quite a match for the "Maxim" model. I've ordered a photocopied XS400J/RJ (Maxim/Seca) service manual, and intend to scan it for anyone who wants. Will let you guys know when it's ready.
    Can't wait can't wait can't wait!!!

dwcopple: that manual is for the Seca only. Admittedly the differences between the Seca and Maxim XS400's are minor (just a whole gear!) but it seems to have led to quite a bit of confusion. I received my manual today. Photocopy quality is a bit variable, but it's legible... could be worse. It's for the '82 Maxim (15G) and '82 Seca (16N).
I haven't quite understood why both that manual and my manual include the '82 Seca, but mine is 16N and that one is 12E. I'm thinking that manual is european (english/french/german). My manual is Canadian (english/french).
I should be scanning it today and will have the PDF ready soon as I can (this weekend most likely).

It is the same manual, I have a printed version (Canadian so french and english) The Seca though rarer is used for most of the pics, go figure.
