And now after a wee bit of work...

Had some wielding done on the frame yesterday so I need to do some grinding, prep & painting before I put the motor back in.

Only took a couple of months to strip 2 engines (top end only), clean, and rebuild. I went through a few litres of degreaser, alloy cleaner and the bits n pieces spent some time in my sand blaster. Finished off with a coat of barrel paint from the local bike shop.

I'm shocked at how good it came up :)

I just used the sand that I got from the local auto shop.

I always do a test piece first just to make sure.

the only thing that removed the oxidization from the alloy (it was really bad) was sand blasting... Even the wire brush wasn't as good.

I find the blaster finish to be far more consistent.

I did give it a soak in alloy cleaner (acid based) after the blast just to make sure the surface was clean before painting.

Oh something else I forgot to mention... It cost me $100NZD to buy... I paid $250 for the donor bike and an XZ400. Got $55 for the Virago leftovers and $18 for the 400. Gasket set cost me $120, set of XV100 carbs was $40, barrel paint was $17 and exhaust paint cost $21

So all up it owes me $475NZD

ya. thats going to rip. also, i would reccomment investing in some atv tires and rims, those golf cart tires do it no justice. want the best setup? in the back put on kenda bearclaw tires, and in the front, holeshots, you'll go through anything

Mad.... You read my mind lol

Scooter... Thanks for that. I've been leaving the tyres and rims to last... Trying to keep the budget to a shoe string so probably won't be able to put those on.

This is probably only going to get used a few times by me.... Need the space back in my garage. Just bought a damaged XJR400 for $100NZD so more space in garage is good :)

    Oh and FYI...

Engine is painted with PJ1 Cylinder paint - Silver I think
Headers were done with PJ1 Exhaust paint - Black
& the frame was done in an epoxy black... 4ltrs of the stuff.... Overkill :)

I still have to mount the tank... Alloy coffin shaped tank off an XS1100 that I painted black.

i'd like to see a fan on at least the back cylinder, that firewall will restrict some air flow on it and it's just not going to have the same kind of air flow in general that a bike gets going down the road
    seat belt ?

You could also redrill the wheels. I had to do that to wheels I ordered for my Raptor. They arrived just a day before my trip to the north wood, and I had no choice, unless I ran the nearly bald tires that came with the quad. And it was raining all weekend. As long as the center register matches up, and the centers of the wheels are flat, go for it!
~ edit~ Just looked at the pix of the new wheels. No easy way to drill them. Bummer.

If I re-drill the rims they'll become instantly worthless.... and you're right, they cant be slotted or drilled anyway.

I've got my hands on some brand new drum brake setups and a quad front end that the new rims fit on to so hopefully I can get them to fit the current setup.

That and I have to pull the cams out and swap them around (swear loudly).

Also still have to get another coby mounted to the left pipe, fit the seat belts, mount the fuel tank...

So close yet so far away... sigh

Ok so I finally gave it another crack over the last few days....

Gave up on trying to fit the off road tyres for now so I could focus on making it run... And last night it did, rough but it ran

Sounds like you have a fuel supply issue? are you getting enough flow to the carbs from that little tank and (i suppose) little fuel tap? Looks like great fun, and definetly a different to the normal m/b cart setups. Build it yourself?

Yes running like a dog.... I'm pulling the carbs down to check if i pumped dirt in to them from a dirty tank... It definately needs a fuel pump setup

Gave the carbs a good clean... they had some crap in them but didn't make any difference to the running.

Going to go back over the cam alignment and tappets before putting my carb sync on it and setting the mixture.

I'm hoping this will get it running better.

I'm also suspicious that having the small header type tank is possibly adding to the starving fuel scenario so I'll take that out of the equation too.

If only I had more garage time and motivation lol

sweet lordie, very nice, some type of fuel pump may help, you can just wire it to its own toggle and remember to turn it on and shut it off every time, a better tank may help, but I was looking over the frame, and theres no safe and ideal place to put that tank.., but very nice, it would be awesome if those kenda's worked on that cart..
