Does anyone have first hand experience or know about these. I have become interested in them lately now that i have the XL500 going i've been enjoying that biggish single feel.

Have read good things about them, they are certainly uncommon but there's some parts / model interchanges available.

    Re: Yam' SRX 600 1988

I know I'd love to get my hands on one but they're relatively rare.

It's basically an "SR500 Gen 2" with the then-current 600cc dual-purpose bike motor in a street package (just as the SR was the street version of the XT/TT.)

Big-bore street singles are a blast. But they've never sold well here in the States for some reason.

One of the largest reasons for the SRX-6: no electric start. Would have sold better in the USA if it had both kick and electric. Also: pretty expensive considering the competition (including several 600cc inline 4s from Yamaha).

I've read that kinda stuff in reviews but they also say how well finished they are, handle well, brake well, lightweight, easier maintenance than a 4 cyl' . Yeah i probly wouldn't complain if it had elec' start but i wont complain that it hasn't.

    Re: Yam' SRX 600 1988

I think the engine is very close to my XT600E (except for the compression release - not on the XT), but I don't think the electric starter from the XT will fit in the SRX-6's frame. The XT uses a single/partial front downtube frame; the XT starter is on the lower/front of the block - right where the twin frame loops sit on the SRX-6. I'm not sure if anything else on the SRX-6 is common to another model sold in the USA (maybe the wheels/brake disks?); probably another reason for its high costs.

That 1987 SRX600 will be in my shed in 2 weeks after a 2 day return trip to pick it up. 7300 klm on the dial, a private import from the mother country. Been sitting in that shed for 2 years and done about 50klm so far in Aus'. The bloke I'm buying it from has been great with photo's and information about it, very straightforward.

All the usual maintenance points will be covered before being cleared for take off. Not previously registered here, will be going on club rego' which is way easier than full rego' first time around.

176kg /388lb wet weight about 140lb lighter than my XJ. For those interested in models it's the 2NX. Nice big disc on the front. And I'm fairly sure it shares the headlight with the XJ650's. Can't wait to have it checked over and for summer to arrive.

I had one back when they were nearly new, the motor had an old school feel but the chassis was sublime on twisty roads

After a while it became a real pig to start, it was stolen by the local kids and abandonned 50 yards from my house, if you don't get it right first time it's quicker to take the bus

    Re: Yam' SRX 600 1988

I lusted after one when I was 16, but I had no job, and begging my dad led nowhere. IIRC the only naging issue they had was keeping the carb set up correctly. Yamaha chos to use a funky 2carb, carb. One carb was for idle to midrange, and the other for midrange and above. There is a way to swich to a single carb, but I can't remember which bike the manifiold needs to come from for it it to fit.

    Re: Yam' SRX 600 1988

I havn't got to the carbs clean and check yet i'm not touching them without a manual, should turn up this week. Been doing other maintenance stuff. The bloke i got it from basically only cleaned it, from what i can tell nothing has been done since new it's just been sitting unused. Original cracked tyres, checked the date codes.

It starts second kick and settles into a smooth idle and revs up well, thats a very good omen. Have done a lot of reading on carb conversions but i'd rather not and things need to be modified to fit in the hotshot keihins. The direct swap 2 to 1 manifold is from a Grizzly ..

Been a while .... it rides great, starts easy cold now that i have 'the technique' down pat > choke off, key off, 3 easy kick overs, turn key on choke on and kick like ya mean it, most times in 1, hot is 1 no prelude. Torquey low down get up 'n go, it's got legs as they say. Just over 4000 rpm at 100 kph sitting with the traffic, change to 5th at 120kph if you want and doing it comfortably is good enough for me. Sits on a 100k no trouble.

The SRXY Beast likes to go through corners, light and nimble, good brakes. It sits well on the road. I have been surprised by the 27 year old shockers, they are quite acceptable for now. I added 20mm extra preload to the forks before taking it out the door, they were a bit soft, glad i did. Progressive springs later.

The YDIS dual carbs -- low revs is a slide carb, at upper revs the cv carb comes in at about 1/4 throttle then it's both --- After a complete dismantle and clean new bits 'n pieces, adjusted the synch from 1 to 2, as in when 2 is called on to act by 1 via an adjustable link, by the book. They work fine, no hesitation tho i will say it's cold blooded, likes to take while idling on choke- enrichment circuit- to get warmed up.

I wasn't too sure i'd be comfortable on it at first with the low bars and slightly rear sets but i don't mind it actually, i'm 6 foot but skinny, wouldn't want to be any taller or you'd be too scrunched up.

I've done all i can to have it safe, reliable and legal. The only things i could do are take it down to frame and paint it and polish the engine. There's nothing i havn't checked measured and adjusted, fixed or replaced as needed.

I'm glad to say i like it coz it's taken some time and $$ to get where it sits today and I'd never seen one in the metal before i bought it. It's my new favourite toy.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing well" as they say, Bushy.Always thought they looked like a lot of fun and at least you have the piece of mind of knowing everything is done.
Nice way to start the New Year mate.

Yes gunna' another enjoyable summer afternoons motorcycling on th srxy beast today, it's a good ride.

Wiz' you mustn't have found ' the technique ' .. a mate has a 500 single very similar to this ( but 2 exhaust pipes, one each side ) that he's been doing up for a coupla years to showroom condition, it's registered now, he gets it going in 2 kicks cold..

    Oh golly that's gorgeous.

I'm green with envy over the SRX, it's one of my "I always wanted one of those" bikes, like the Honda GB500.

I miss my SR500s and thoroughly regret selling the one I didn't crash. Big singles are a hoot.
