I want to take off the yamaha emblem on the gas tank of my 82 550. Im going to paint it soon, but I want to keep riding it until the time, if I was to take the screws out that hold the emblem on, is there a nut in the tank, or is it a threaded bracket? I just want to ensure that I won't $^%& up. Thanx again fellas.

the nuts are part of a bracket, which is welded to the tank. some body filler would make the whole thing disappear...

The screw doesn't go through into the tank, there'll be an indent with a nut tacked to it.

I'll bet you could find someone with a "filled in" tank to trade with. The emblems are attached to a double-ended bracket with screw holes tapped in each end that is "countersunk" into an appropriately shaped depression in the tank. Why not repaint and then install brand-new emblems?
