    Hi all ,
I picked up a 1980 rd 250lc about 6 months ago with the idea of doing a full restoration on it. All was going well until I tried to get it going recently...... no spark. I have put the multimeter over the exciter coil and the pulse coil and the resistance is within the specs according to Haynes. The primary and secondary of the ignition coil checks out OK also. The only thing I carnt find info. on checking is the CDI,so before I try to find another one, does anyone know of any procedure that will allow me to test it. Would greatly appreciate any help forthcoming.

    Cheers,Murray

    I have a 1975 RD250

These bikes require an ABSOLUTE fully charged battery. Try that. Also, check out usa2strokers.com

Thanks Snapper , but I,m pretty sure that the '75 RD in standard form had points ignition (unless previously upgraded to electronic ) The LC has CDI electronic ignition, where the battery issue is not so critical, even so I,ve a very large ,fully charged booster pack as the battery.

    Cheers, Murray

Murray, there is a kawasaki triple CDI system checker on fleabay right now. Last night, the bid was 15 bucks. It will work on a twin as well. Otherwise, you are going to have to check each connector first, then each pickup for resistance and check against the specs. They rarely died so you probably have a bad connection somewhere. Nice machine!!

Thanks again snapper, interesting story about this bike .I was grabbing a coffee at my local cafe near work. I carnt remember how bikes came into a conversation with the owner, but he ended up telling me he had an old 2 stroke down in the basement that hadn,t been started for 16 years, and would I like to see it..... Would I!!!. Tuned out to be the rd250 complete except for the radiator shroud. ,said he wanted to get rid of it and would I like to make an offer, well says I , since the motor wouldn,t turn over and there could be any amount of internal damage,I more or less as a joke offered him $50. You could have picked me up of the floor when he said ....OK . Motor internally good, bored to 2nd o/s ,and all internals flushed with kerosine and all mechanicals fine. It was originally white with the blue decals, but I intend to convert it to the "Mars Bar " theme, black with the orange and red decals.

    ................ cheers,murray

good luck with your bike,i have an 81 350lc and it starts 1st kick with a dead battery, when i pulled the battery out it didnt have a drop of fluid in it,anyway it wont be starting again for a while, have stripped it back to bare frame and have decided to spend a couple of years trying to make it look brand new,

Right Ken , these bikes dont need battery power to start. The initial juice to start the whole ignition process comes from the exciter coil built into the stator unit With the key in the off position, the CDI is grounded ,ie unable to start. When you turn the key to the on position, it breaks that contact ,allowing the bike to start (hopefully )
    ........................cheers, Murray
