    Hi Guys

I am going to exchange two of my shims to correct the clearances. Will it be okay to remove the shim and then rotate the cam directly against the bucket to reset the tool. I know there is no chance of a piston hitting the valve.

Not a good idea, cam may damage edge of bucket

I have experience with that, the bucket will gouge the sides of the cam lobe. Had an impatient moment and paid for it. :D Granted this is a 650 but the designs are similar. You can get plastic shims too.

I should've elaborated on the plastic shim thing. They are used in place of a real shim when you are swapping things around. Useful if you are able to get in spec with just the shims in the motor but with the availability of shims you can usually just take your measurements and order replacements or participate in the shim pool.

I thought that Jayrodoh they were temporary shims, they would be handy to change the metal shims over where possible. How does the shim pool work? Do we donate our old shims?

That is why l originally asked about rotating the cams without a shim in a bucket because l had no spares. Plastic shims are handy for that.

One of our members has a big stash of shims, once you determine what you need you basically swap what you have for what you need. Others have donated extra shims as well to keep the pool going. Not sure if he deals with UK though or if it would be worth it to pay shipping on that. Have you checked with any local Yamaha dealers or MC shops? It's not an oddball or rare shim size.

you can make a plastic shim from thick bottles. like an oil container
    any soft not brittle plastic.

Buy and keep an extra shim in your kit. It will make it easier and faster to swap shims around when you need. At under $10, it's a cheap investment.

Hi Kosel I got four spare shims now. First time I changed shims to be honest and it was really easy, bike is running much better now. Thanks.
