I just wanted to get some other thoughts on oil changes. I was planning on just getting some 20w50 and filter for the engine; 80w90 for the shaft drive. But I got to thinking and I use synthetic in other vehicles and my ATV. Although I started those on synthetic after break in.

So what are your thought on using a synthetic engine oil and gear oil on a bike with 18,000 miles? I will assume it did not have synthetic in it before.

First, post the bike your referencing. Typically, these things do not run well with synthetics. The clutch good old fashion motorcycle oil and 20w50 best for summer running. The long time members here will steer you to links and discussion as to why these old clutches need the non-synthetics. I use Castrol 4T 20w50.

Also, check out the thread from K-moe on the tech page. More information that you likely want.

Thanks for the reply. I will check out K-moe's posts. In general it is not always a good idea in autos to get into "high" miles on conventional then change to synthetic; it can introduce problems. I just wasn't too sure about bikes and there mileage.

K-moe seems to be some type of lubricant wizard. I wouldn't be surprised if he's involved in the industrial lube industry in some way. Where others use hearsay and conjecture, he backs his advice with scientific research and big time studies... I would say he's the local guru of lube.

I just read a bunch of stuff and talk to folks who now more than I do (having both a science and a maintenance background helps a little too). Link to the oil thread is in my signature.
BTW, switching synthetics in any engine is not a problem (aside from HF oils in wet-clutch engines). That wive's tale came about long ago when synthetic oils were really new, and many engines on the road were relying on sludge buildup to plug weepy gaskets.

Thanks for the info. I think I will go with a synthetic or semi synthetic. I like that screw on filter mod as well!

IMO your starter clutch will thank you if you go no more than semi synthetic. Speaking from a personal experience.

Your starter clutch, and clutch will thank you if you use a motorcycle specific semi-synthetic. Castrol makes one that has worked well in our machines. Overall just make sure that what you choose is JASO MA compliant, or JASO MA rated.

Thank you for the Castrol suggestion! I order a filter and will pick up the oil sometime this week. I will remember to report back just to let everyone know my experience with Castrol.
