    Hi all

I hope I’m not looking dim here, but I’ve stripped my XJ900 engine down completely. All of the bearings needed replacing and I also decided to replace the clutch starter chain (called Hy-vo in the manual) just to be on the safe side. Seems sensible if the engine is totally apart.

Only thing is the manual states to replace the chain the ‘right way around’. I assume by that it refers to replacing the old chain exactly as it came out because of the way it’s worn in.

That said, my new chain has a blue mark on one side. Is there a way this should go or is the blue mark to aid future removal so you know which way round it goes back on?

Apologies again if I’m being simple. Probably over thinking it! But I don’t want to pull this apart again!

    Many thanks,
    Shaun

I've had a quick look on CMSNL at the parts list and on the "alternative starter chain" there is a blue mark shown, but to me both the chains look identical apart from that blue mark and both are Hy-Vo type from what i can see. It looks like the mark is to distinguish between genuine part and non original equipment part. I've given you a link here > Yamaha XJ900F 1989 3NG1 EUROPE 293NG-300E1 STARTER - buy original STARTER spares online
What i would also replace, because like you say you want to do the job right and once only, and that is replace parts 7, 8 and 9 in the fische which push against the starter clutch outer assembly which help it to grip properly and not slip. You know how sometimes they slip when worn, well those are the parts that cause it.
That's just my take on things, so if i'm wrong i don't mind being told so.

I would also replace the starter chain GUIDE, that's the really weak link internally within the entire engine.

    Hi guys.

Thank so much for your swift replies. Much appreciated! I’m happy now the chain is OK. I had a feeling I was over thinking it. I replaced the whole starter unit in the end with a genuine Yamaha part, and yes I also fitted a new chain guide.

They’re great engines to work on, but my word, there’s so many o-rings and oil seals and small bits that can be easy to forget!

    Thanks again.

    Shaun
