I have a 1980 yamaha yz465 that I am trying to restore. I have come across a problem that I am seeking help with. I trying to figure out how the clutch actuator arm ( the lever that the clutch cable connects to on the engine) stays connected to the case. This lever connects to a pin that goes down into the case . The problem is that with the cable removed I can pull this pin out of the case by hand. There is nothing holding the pin into the case. Does anyone have experience with this bike that could tell me how the pin is to fasten to the case

Thanks to the information. I just got my 82 seca 550 up and running after it sat for over 20 years. Now I am trying to get the yz put back together. The seca I have own since new but the yz was given to me in pieces.

    Hi Tjm

Oddly enough, that's the way it fits in. No retainer. Some guys will twist a bit of baling wire down to one of the side cover screws as a "feel good" retainer, but you don't need it. I have an '80 YZ 125, '79 YZ 125, '80 IT175 and an '80 IT125...all of them without a retainer on that lever. It just has a return spring that goes around the clutch lever and the lower part of the spring sits against the cases.

My '74 CZ400 MX bike has baling wire on that lever from the factory! So it's fairly common.

Odd set up, it feels like there should be something there...but it's the way it is set up. You are good.

Nice bike by the way! The '80 YZ465's are holeshot kings! Tough to ride, but a hell of a lot of fun. Yamaha tamed them down a little in '81.

Thank you for your posting. It put my mind at easy. I got the bike from a friend for cheap but it was in pieces. I am now trying to get it back together. My riding back ground is similar to yours. I saved for two years to be able to purchase my 1st bike a 1978 Yamaha dt 100. I was lucky enough to have an older brother that taught me how to ride it. I rode the thing every day for 2 years. Then when I was 15 I was able to buy a 1981 yz 125. Love that bike. I have always enjoyed riding. Anyway thanks again
