So I just got my bike back from the shop after a very expense tune-up and repair job. I had been getting gas in the oil, and the shop basically rebuild the carbs (amoung other things). I don't know if they inspected the petcock valve.

I rode it for while, then opened the oil filler cap to smeill for any gas odors. Sure enough, I could smell gas. Could this be residual, or should any residual odor quickly disapper?

I was wondering if anyone still had the problem of gas in the oil even after carbs were cleaned and rebuilt.

I'm pretty sure your gonna smell gas since blow-by will occur even with a fresh oil change. A light odor to be sure, not fumes right out of the tank. I think you have residual because I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that they didn't drain out all of the oil from your crankcase (middle drive drain plug is a mystery to most shops).

The crankcase is under constant, light-vacuum, venting ... at the airbox.

I'd be alarmed if there was an odor of gas from the crankcase; particularly after having the bike serviced very recently.

I would say it's very possible to have this happen.
I did my carbs and rebuilt the fuel petcock and still had it happen to me, just once, haven't had any problems since.
Prior to starting my bike I check my site glass oil level, making sure it didn't mysteriously fill up on it's own!
