Yet another problem. Stupid mirrors

    I took the mirrors off my bike, and it seems like the threds in the holes are completly shot. Is there any quick fix for this?

    Yamaha uses a left hand thread on the right side mirror.

    I suspect you'll have a hard time finding a left handed helicoil.

    If you fix the threads you'll probably have to replace the mirror.

    It's pretty much just the left side that I need to fix. The right seems to be holding good. Why will I need to replace the mirror?

    The right mirror has a left hand thread on the stalk. If you put a right hand insert in the mount the stalk won't thread in anymore.

    The LH mirror uses a right hand thread. That one you can stick a helicoil in and be just fine.

    It should be a 10mm X 1.25 tap you need, it's a finer thread... make sure it's not the 10mm X 1.50.

    If it is only the left mirror it should be Right Hand Thread and a hardware shop may have it.

    OR!!! you can do what i did today, take of the piece and bring it to a local machine shop (hopefully you have one) and have them tap it out for you. Luckily I knew the guy and he did it for free.

    Actually once i got mine in right where i wanted them i did put on some industrial strength glue :D gotta love that stuff!

    I did the JB weld, so we'll see if it will hold. If not I'll have to try and retap, and if that doesnt work, I'll put a new insert in

    JB weld will hold if mixed well and left to set for atleast 24 hours. I broke my front brake lever and used JB weld to repair it. It holds good and solid. I tried like hell to break the weld, but can't do it. So I figured it should be a safe enough fix.
    Once you install the mirror with JB Weld, you shouldn't have to worry about getting it back off without using a pipe wrench!!
