anyone ever have the head off of an '82 XJ650 maxim and drive appropriate sized lead sinkers into the holes to close the YICS passages off? or is this a forbidden thing to do? i currently have mine apart, and am considering doing this very thing while i am waiting for parts, and i dont see why it wouldnt work. i know it would be illegal in california, but i dont live there. it would be less costly than buying that troublesome tool that malfunctions most of the time, and probably more effective...

I reckon it'd work a charm! although I think the YICS gives you a lot of lee way between carb tunes too.
Make your own yics tool with a bit of threaded rod, some nuts, washer and fuel hose, I've been using mine for years now and only replaced the fuel line bits once.

It's a passive system that people blame for problems that are not releated to the system, but instead are related to not servicing the carbs properly.
Just leave the YICS system alone. Since the head is off you can go ahead and clean out what little carbon might be inside of the passages.
You do not need to use the YICS tool to synchronize the carbs, UNLESS you live somewhere where emissions testing is done on motorcycles (i.e. nowhere in the U.S.). Using the tool only makes a very small difference in the end-result.

Blocking the YICS when your syncing and tuning, makes a HUGE difference to vibration at high rpms... so technically you don't NEED to use it but do you want a smooth ride or rough ride?
The YICS normalises between the carbs and it makes it hard to differentiate which carb is doing what. You might be fiddling with #1 and its really #3 causing the issue...
At any rate, take a look at my tune kit... I just keep it ready to roll and it makes me happy when I do a tuneup.

    Again, I'll respectfully disagree....

I haven't used my YICS tool.... Ever.

My bikes are nice and smooth to at least 100MPH.... I haven't gotten up the nerve to go over that yet--- lol. But at steady 85 mph onvtge highway... Smooth as silk. Never used my YICS tool , probably never will. Don't need to.

Your better at tuning than I that's for sure.
I tried by ear and by counting turns and with using paperclips and paper and etc etc...
I have spoken to other people who tune by ear and have the nouse for it... so I know exactly what you are saying.
I'm definitely not one of those people though.
    Horses for courses I guess.

I'm with Hogfiddles. My engine is smooth all the way to redline, and I have had it up to terminal velocity (unofficially GPS verified, "closed" course, no performance award given, do not try at home...).

Neither of us use the YICS tool, but we both use manometers to synch.

Maybe one day I'll graduate to that level but not for a while I suspect haha.
I definitely tried to colour tune and sync without the YICS tool many times, mind you that was without the carbtune or the colourtune also, and ended up with many a flat battery and much flooding and fouling of plugs.
Since then... and with all my equipment... sexiness ensues.

At any rate, if the poster lives near you guys you can give him pointers, if he lives near me I'll lend him my YICS tool.

I don't tune by ear.... (Well, motorcycly speaking---- musically speaking, I'm tune every single note that I play every second as I play..... Lol)

I use the Morgan carbtune and the colortune plug.

Yes it will work I have done several 750s and 1100s. Please don't use lead to plug the hole, it will come loose. Tap the hole and put in a aluminum bolt or plug with loc-tite. I use 1/8 NPT aluminum tapered plugs from the hardware store, they work great . Brass works also if you can't find aluminum.

mlew, are you marking the engines in any way so the next caretaker knows that the YICS ports have been blocked?

(That would be so he can ignore the passages after they are unfilled....)

No , never thought about marking them. I just tell them it has been blocked. Most of them are still in the family so I know where they are so I am the one who works on them anyway.

It's just something I was curious about. There are standards for marking overbores and other modifications, so it occured to me to ask if you were doing anything in that regard. I tend to take the long-view; that my work is going to outlast me, and someone I will never know is going to come along afterward with questions.

Maybe we can make a standard: White out the YICS lettering on the engine side covers.

How about just switching the side covers to opposite sides? Then the "YICS" would be upside down.

I'm thinking something that would be more universally recognized, like painting a

Although... you do realise the YICS badge is just a badge. So you can peel it out of the side cover.
Then you can get your metal stamps out and smack in NO-YICS or YICLESS or FREED FROM THE BURDEN OF YICS (bit long maybe).
