Title: Clutch question
mr.fork - April 26, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
I've changed the clutch in my XJ750 - that was easy as pie. 1 hour including filling and draining the oil. Anyone else done this?
Question - my clutch is grabbing every once in a while - when I stop it's slightly engaged - if I let go the brake, it creeps forwards. Also makes it hard to put into neutral.
Did I torque the pressure plate wrong? (the bolts that hold the springs)

sounds more like the adjustment is a tad off. I'm not fermillear with the 750 on my 11 there is an adjustment inside the cover by the clutch? that needs to be adjusted first then take out the slack by the bars.Hope this makes sence?

It may just be that the new plates are bedding in. How strong does it pull while you are stopped? Does the engine struggle at all while you are stopped and braked? I have not heard of a clutch being over torqued. As Chevy said, it could just need a little finer adjustment.

mr.fork... what kind/brand of clutch did you use? Did you replace everything, or just the friction disks? My 82 750 max needs one badly... its starting to slip at full throttle now that its running so well. I was looking arround and found www.cyclepages.com. They carry the KG Clutch Factory clutch parts. They have a pro and a kevlar friction disk set, 20% stiffer clutch springs, and the steel plates. I am assuming the kevlar friction disks are the better of the two, right? An entire set is only $100... so I'm thinking I'll go ahead with it unless anyone knows a reason not to. Anybody know a "better" clutch?
KG Clutch Factory clutch parts (for '82 xj750 max on cyclepages.com):
-Pro Series Friction Disc Set - $54.86
KG134-8
-Kevlar Series Friction Disc Set – $55.76
KG132-8HPK
-Steel Plates (need 7) - $4.95
KGSP-503
-20% stiffer spring set - $8.95
KGS-025

I assume you have the cable adjusted properly.
When you reinstalled the clutch cover the arm on the cover may have been just off of it's ideal setting. I just tore into my clutch today and it took me a number of times to get that arm back on correctly so the lever would fully contract and release the clutch.

Whoops - I didn't realize how old this thread was. I'm sure you have it sorted out by now.
