Title: 1982 XJ650RJ Exhaust
Description: Aftermarket Replacements?
Redcapri2000 - April 28, 2005 05:11 PM (GMT)
Hi - I am new to this group - but I bought my 1982 XJ650RJ brand new in 1985 - and road it to high school. It sat from 1989 until 2004 - and has been recently resurrected. But I have one problem - the exhaust pipes (mufflers) have rotted out badly. I have seen several aftermarket solutions - but I am not a fan of the 4 into 1 pipes. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? Do pipes from a different model fit? Or what about the pipes from a Radian?
Thanks!!!

You can check ebay for used pipes for your bike. I think a wide range of XJ series might fit.

Jama do a good 4 into 2 replacement at a reasonable price.

Any idea if the Radian exhaust can fit? A friend of mine (out of state) - is junking his (he hit the back of a car) - and has offered to send them to me - but I don't want to bother if they won't fit.
Thanks for the feedback though!!!

I'm curious about the same topic. I would really like to replace my exhaust, but the cost is a little prohibitive.
The Old Bike Barn has the most variety I've seen in a single place. They offer 4 sets of pipes that are compatible with an XJ650, 2 are 4-into-1 and 2 are 4-into-2. The 4-into-2s are pretty pricey though, $549.95. The basic 4-into-1 chrome pipes with canister end makes much more sense at $299.99, but neither is really cheap... but I haven't found a place any cheaper yet.

Coulpe of issues with the 4-in-1:
- it could change your exhaust flow. You might have to re-ject or retune your carb.
- it's a pain in the arse to change your oil. :D

I've got a Vance&Hines 4-into-1 on my '82 XJ750 Maxim... I changed the oil/filter last week... it was tricky, but not hard.

You might take a look at motorcycleproshop.com for systems by Mac and Jardine. I'm eyeing a 4 into 1 with black pipes and a brushed steel canister that Jardine makes. Didn't think the prices were too bad.

changing the exhaust alone should not require jetting change.all your doing is getting rid of spent gasses. now if you open up the intake side of things thats a different story. Now i have a set of muffler ends from an XJ1100 if theres an interest. Not mint but very useable and in decent shape.

I went with a 4 into 2 MAC exhaust that I got off of Ebay for $300...
Here is one going for $285

Thanks for everybody's help and suggestions!!! My new neighboor down the street is a mechanic (actually owns his own garage, cars, not bikes) - and stopped by to see what I was doing "tinkering". He has offered to weld the existing mufflers for me - saying that he has done that before and he thinks I will be very happy with the results. The best part - it's free!!
I will let you know how it comes out!
