Title: running rich
Description: xj650 running rich

I am at a loss on my bike. It has a hesitation right at the start and after its going it runs perfect. The idle is steady and strong. The power after about 2500 rpm is great but I just can't get is to launch very well.
I have checked my plugs and when idling it is running rich, but when I have taken it for a good ride and take out the plugs they look good.
I have had my carbs cleaned and run seafoam through them.
Where should my air/fuel mixture adjustment be set? They are now about 4 turns out which seems a little excess.
The Haynes manual does not have much on setting the carb.
Can any one Help

I wld start by turning in your Air/Fuel mixture screws by a 1/2 turn. Run the bike for a day or two and see how it behaves. I have had this situation and found this adjustment
will help with the bogging at launch.

You should also consider doing a carb balance and colortune tune-up. This will
ensure that your carbs are set properly.

Sounds like you need a Morgan carb sync and a colortune. Check it out in the links.

I have already balanced the carbs. I have not wanted to spend the money on a colortune system yet. What size are our plugs?
What would be the average number of turns for the adjustment screw. As I mentioned mine is at 4?

Our plugs are 14mm.

I just ordered a morgan carbtune and a colortune plug, can't wait to get it!

Average is about 1.5 - 2 turns out. Mine are also at about 4 and I have the same type of symptoms you describe. Give me a week and I'll let you know how the tune up worked out.

I look forward to hearing about how it goes with your new kit.

Colortune is amazing!!!! I had a hard time getting my mixture right but with colortune it is a lot easier to set it correctly.

Yep, I've been 'colortuning' my engine for 2 years now. Cost me $50USD for the device, and another $60 for the Morgan CarbtuneII sticks. Considering I spent $210 on a tuneup, I'm guessing I save $200 a year alone in tune-ups that I do myself.
