if so, do they mess up the A/F ratio at all? need to rejet the carbs or anything?

was thinking about putting them on, it seems like it would be a tad bit easier to work on the carbs without that rubber hosing and airbox in the way.

CM, it will mess up your A/F mixture to some extent, as these are high performance filters made specifically to flow more air, so plan on some mixture adjustments. To get the most out of them, you will want to increase your jets too so you can flow more fuel to go along with all that extra O2.

If you just doing it just for ease of maintenance, I don't think I'd spend the money on performance filters, but that's just my opinion.

I've considered doing it on all the bikes I've owned but never actually made the purchase. How much 'seat of the pants' power increase is there jumping to pod filters? Is it worth the reduction in fuel range?

Not only do the pods mess up your F/A mix, they also allow water (rain) into the carbies, which is not a good thing.
Many have tried and many have failed to get a set of these things set just right.
Although if one has access to a exhaust gas analyzer, getting something that is drivable may be possible.

good point, didnt think abou that, but im not too concerned about this, as the only bike i own that sees the rain is one of these.

I've been running that style air filter for several years on my XJ550, with only minor issues (a minor lack of power from a stop until I get the RPMs up a little). When I bought the bike it had those filters, and I just discovered during my recent carb rebuild that it still has the stock jets :o .

In all honesty, I'm impressed that it's been hauling my 210 pounds around so well at highway speeds with stock jets! But now that I know, I'll indeed be re-jetting.

Those filters are indeed expensive, but they should last the life of the bike with proper care. And you can always stow away a couple pieces of plastic wrap and a rubber band to cover the filters in case it rains when the bike is parked!
