I just picked up a non running 82 xj750 seca. I'm trying to get the carbs off it to clean them but am having a heck of a time. I slide the airbox back as far as it will go but I can't for the life of me get the carbs out of the intake boots. I just need a little extra space. Have any advice for me?
I tried to take one of the intake boots off, but the hex nut ended up snapping, so I don't think I'll try it with the other ones.
Thanks in advance.
On my brothers CB750 Honda I was able to tilt the airbox down at the front. Then I could pull it out the side to get more room.
I've owned a cb750 and was able to do that too, but the xj750's airbox is huge and extends all the way back underneath the seat. I see no way it could come out of the bike without having the carbs removed.
I'll give it another go tomorrow if we get a little sunshine.
When taking the carbs off, you need to loosen the clamps on the intake boots (in front of the carbs) and the rear ones that attach it to the airbox.
Next, loosen the bolt that holds the airbox to the bike. Push the airbox back towards the rear as much as possible.
Then, push the carbs a little farther into the intake boots enough to pull them free from the airbox boots. Lift the free end up , wiggling back and forth, then pull out through the side.
I took carbs off a Maxim that sat in a garage for 8 years untouched. It was similair to your condition.
