Title: Sealing the engine case, what do I use?

I'm currently in the process of fixing a problem deep in the core of my engine block. This is the first time I've had to do something so complicated.

When I split the engine case into its two main part, there was no gasket. There was traces of some kind yellowish glue around the outter edges. What is that stuff? And what is the best thing to use for sealing the engine case... if I am to use anything at all that is.

Are you are talking about the crankcase halves on an 1980-84 650/750? If so, then yes there is a gasket, which is applied with silicone gasket sealer. See page 90, section 36 of your Haynes manual for assembly details. If not, I can't help you as this is the only manual I have :} Cary.

Your yamaha dealer should have the gasket sealer, I think it is about $10 a tube. I use form-a-gasket from NAPA auto parts on the ATV cases that I assemble and have not had a problem yet.
