Title: Any one had a caliper drag on the rotor?
Description: 82 XJ750J Maxim

Hey there,

Great site, been looking around here for a few days.

A friend and myself have a 82 XJ750 project bike for the summer to work on and we're trying to trouble shoot our first major problem. The bike must have been in a bit of a crash as the front right side caliper mount is draging (already showing some interesting wear on the rotor and caliper) on the rotor. It sounds horrible when we had to wheel the bike around.

We just removed the front wheel then the seals, bearings, and spacers. According to our Haynes manual all the right pieces were in the correct order. So right now we think the forks are bent (we have a second set of forks to try) or the spacer (#17) shown here:

has been shortened/worn. This would allow the brake rotor to get closer to the right fork leg and hence make contact with the caliper mount. Anyone know the length of this spacer?

Has anyone come across this type of problem? We're open to any suggestions. We then thought the bearings may have been incorrect but they are both Koyo 6302 Z bearings.

Just to be sure, the spacer shown in the above link #2 slides on the end of #1? They came out of the wheel like this.

Thanks
BCCC

Hy front rotor was froze up also.

I ended up tearing it out and using emery paper to clean it up. Put it back together works like a charm.

As far as spacing goes, just make up a spacer :)

Thanks for the reply Ryan.

When we looked at the rotor and caliper it was pretty obvious how out of wack it was compared to the bike's left side rotor/caliper. We thought of the same thing to just make a spacer to give more clearance.

I think we'll swap out the forks for another set we have and see what it looks like. If it's the same problem I'm sure we'll be back here asking for suggestions. ;)

We took a closer look at the second set of forks and they are bent :(. The ones that were on the bike when we picked it up look fine so that narrows the problem down to the wheel, rotor, spacers, and bearings etc.

Anyone know the length of spacer #17?

Thanks,
BCCC
