Title: Speedometer problem
Description: Gears?

SamuelHayden - May 28, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Greetings,

I'm a brand new owner of a 1983 Yamaha XJ750, and the speedometer isn't working. I've tried taking the cable off at the wheel and turning it with a cordless drill. This does make the speedometer work, so I think the unit is fine, it's just drive gears at the wheel that I suspect to be bad. Does anyone know how to fix or replace these and where to get replacement parts. I have a Haynes manual but it isn't really helpful for this sort of thing.

I'm actually having some trouble with the Tach as well. It works, but it's really sluggish. Can this be lubricated or just freed up some how? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Had a similar prob with the speedo on my XS 11. Turned out the tire shop messed up the drive dogs on the brake disk when putting it back together after a tire swap. A little percussive maintenance (hammer) on the dogs made them mesh with the speedo drive again and now we're all happy.

If your trip meter is messing up, make sure the clutch cable is not touching it. That can put it in a partial reset mode.

Thanks for the tip. I'm getting a new tire this week anyways so either I'll have the shop guys check it out or I'll get the hammer out. If I do need new gears, would you happen to know where I could get replacements? Thanks

I believe Yamaha still makes that part for your bike. Costs about $50.
You might try cleaning up and greasing up the old speedo gear first. That is what the Haynes book recommends. It also mentions that rarely does a speedo gear go bad, if you lube it up with each tire change.

I just took my front tire off for the first time. It was not a hard job, and it costs twice as much for the mechanic to remove the tire from the bike. Although, I did go through the extra expense by buying a torch wrench.

I feel better each time I repair something on my bike. I get a better understanding of how my bike operates.

Good luck! B)
