Title: Side stand 83 650 Maxim
Description: how does it go? feeling sheepish

Got this bike a little while back and it had no side stand - and the bracket that is welded to the frame was missing too. I now have collected the parts, and can see how the bracket gets welded on, but can't figure out how the pieces go together.
I'm sure once it's together it will seem really obvious but I have never seen one, and the diagrams in Haynes don't help.
Could someone describe to me where that bent chunk of metal with the slot and hole fits with the spring etc? Usually I'm good with puzzles....
Thanks,
Jim
PS Better yet a picture - is there a way to post a pic here or do you have to refer to a url?

The spring goes from the post right above the side stand mounting bolt, and runs down the leg of the side stand to the hook that is about half way down the leg.
I'll snap a picture of it once my camera charges up.

Got it now, the metal plate goes between the upper post and the top end of the spring and operates the interlock switch - so that the bike won't start if the side stand is down.
No need for pic now, thanks anyway,
Jim

OK have the stand bracket welded nicely to the frame, bike leans just the right amount etc - and the exhaust completely interferes with eth side stand and I can't put it back on!
I think someone must have put the wrong exhuast system on this bike; it's the only thing I can figure.
So my question now - could someone explain, or better, please send me pictures of how the exhaust is supposed to fit around/over/under the sidestand? Or really what the exhaust should even look like on this bike? Haynes is really no help, as the only pictures there seem to be of 1982 bikes and mine's an 83.
Maybe I will have to get the correct exhaust from a wrecker but I want to know what I am looking for.
Thanks,
Jim

Go to the xjowners home page and click on links. Doug's picture link is there with plenty of xjs to look up.

OK so my exhaust looks like the one in this picture:
Exhaust like I havewhich I think must be wrong for my 83 XJ650K Maxim.
Should I have the exhaust system where there is no centre box, like this?
Appears to be 4 into 2That looks as though it would make room for my stand.
